What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Equal Voice Leadership Academy
The Equal Voice Leadership Academy was created to enable people of color and residents of low-wealth communities to emerge as grassroots leaders in their communities. The program is designed to provide methods, increase skills, and strengthen technological competencies of its members, who become part of a untied movement of engaged leaders and nonprofit allies advocating for solutions to poverty. We believe those most impacted by poverty are key to developing solutions to alleviate poverty. According to EVLA graduate José Luis Sanchez, as a result of attending EVLA, “I’ve learned to be more proactive and to lead by example, to organize and follow up on projects.”
Boards and Commissions Leadership Training
Currently there are limited opportunities for increasing the capacity of people of color and residents of underrepresented communities so they can serve on nonprofit boards and public commissions or run for political office. Scheduled to launch in 2013, our Boards and Commissions Leadership Training will fill this void with a curriculum based on best-practices developed by Urban Habitat, the Oakland-based nonprofit. Through this program, underserved communities will be represented at decision-making tables in Marin and beyond.
Marin City Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition
This coalition of nonprofits, faith-based organizations, service providers, government agencies, and others works to build a safe, healthy, thriving, and self-determining Marin City. Marin Grassroots and the Marin City MLK Coalition recently succeeded in securing a $4.9 million grant from the state of California to rebuild Rocky Graham Park to give Marin City a green focal point and to give its residents more access to open space.
The coalition hosts the highly anticipated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration every year on the national holiday that marks Dr. King’s birthday.
Action Coalition for Equity
Marin Grassroots convened the Action Coalition for Equity (ACE) to advocate for fair and affordable housing in Marin. ACE has worked closely with the County of Marin for representation of underserved communities and to advance affordable housing throughout the county, in order to counteract the present situation, in which people of color and low-income families live in highly segregated areas. This is a time of opportunity to advance fair housing in Marin because the county government is addressing its noncompliance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2009.
We Are Marin Campaign and Festival
The We Are Marin Campaign seeks to promote community-building and raise awareness about the importance of embracing diversity in our county. The We Are Marin Festival, to be held on September 29, 2012, at the Marin County Fair Grounds, will celebrate Marin’s diversity with live music, food, and information booths. Join us for the exciting inaugural event from noon to 6 Marin has been divided and segregated racially and economically. The We Are Marin Campaign brings people together by celebrating differences and commonalities. We Are Marin promotes unity, community, and a safe and healthy home and environment for everyone.
