Mission Statement

The heart and soul of Jewish philanthropic and humanitarian activities, Federation embodies a 3,500-year-old tradition of caring, derived from the teaching of the Torah and sustained by the pursuit of Jewish community, Jewish values and Jewish peoplehood. As the voice and strength of Detroit's diverse and vibrant Jewish community today, Federation plays the leadership role in identifying needs within the Jewish community, and in mobilizing human and financial resources, engaging in communal planning and advocating to meet those needs. Federation seeks to further the relationship between the Jewish community and the greater community in the Detroit area. Working in partnership with 19 local agencies, as well as dozens of national and international organizations, Federation is committed to ensuring the welfare, continuity and vitality of the Jewish people here, in Israel and around the world.

They may find themselves challenged to fulfill their governance responsibilities or frustrated by the expectations that the organization has set for them. Program Description:

Financial Resource Development: The engine that drives Federation's work is a centralized fundraising effort that supports a network of 19 Jewish local agencies that include: Jewish Apartments and Services, Jewish Community Center, Jewish Community Council, Jewish Family Service, Jewish Home and Aging Services, JVS, Hebrew Free Loan, Hillel, B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, Hillel Foundations, Tamarack Camps, and 6 Jewish day schools. Beyond Detroit, the Federation network extends overseas to partner agencies working on behalf of Jewish communities in 63 countries. Federation's Alliance for Jewish Education serves as the central resource for Jewish educational services in the metro Detroit area. It initiates programming and provides consultation in collaboration with congregations, schools and educational organizations focusing on the needs of children, parents, teachers, teens, adults and families. Historically Federation has played a key role in Israel's welfare, renewal and growth. Today it maintains strong ties, working through its overseas partners, the Jewish Agency for Israel and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, as well as through independent activities in support of social service agencies in its Partnership 2000 Region of the Central Galilee. To further deepen person-to-person ties to the Jewish State, Federation-sponsored Missions bring hundreds of Detroiters to Israel each year.

Through its fundraising efforts, endowment funding and other capital funding initiatives, Federation's total philanthropic achievement of nearly $100 million touched thousands of lives, in Detroit, in Israel and through Jewish communities around the world.
