What we aim to solve
Parents foster Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) when they respond to a child's needs, provide a nurturing home, and have responsive interactions with their children. Furthermore, positive parenting practices are strongly linked to child outcomes in language acquisition, cognitive skills, confidence, social competence, and more. However, factors caused by systemic inequities such as chronic stress, isolation, and trauma contribute to an "achievement gap," which prevents children from entering school ready to learn. 75% of children from families with moderate-to-high incomes were prepared for kindergarten, compared to 48% of children in poverty. Parents are experts on their children and communities. However, families of color face barriers rooted in structural racism and bias that prevent them from engaging and leading in community- and systems-level planning and decision-making. This gap in power-sharing results in inequitable health and education outcomes for children.

Power of Parenting
Launched in 2017 with great success, Families First’s Power of Parenting program was designed with an understanding of the heightened vulnerability of families during the early years of a child’s life, as well as the incredible potential—and high return on investment—of interventions targeted to parents during these years. Our Power of Parenting program is built around two curricula: one for parents of children from birth to age 3 and one for parents of children ages 3 to 8. Over twelve 90-minute sessions, parents gain access to: -7 interactive parenting workshops, during which our expert Parenting Educators guide them to a deep understanding of critical parenting topics, such as children’s developmental stages, communication and language building, using play as learning, and creating stability through routines. -3 Parent Cafés, which are discussion-based sessions interspersed among the workshops. They provide opportunities for parent leadership and engagement while building social connections among members of the group. -The Families First Mobile App, where parents can find key information and videos from each session. -A graduation, where parents celebrate their accomplishments with their family and community. • 7
