What we aim to solve
On June 1, 1996, more than 300,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial for the first ever Stand for Children Day, the largest demonstration for children in U.S. history. Out of this amazing day, parents and community members utilized the tremendous energy to return home and fight to improve the lives of children through better education. Every day the staff, members, and supporters of Stand for Children heed the call of the great Civil Rights icon, Rosa Parks, who challenged the rally crowd by saying, “If I can sit down for justice, you can stand up for children" Since 1999, Stand has achieved over 209 state and local victories and leveraged over $6.7 billion in education investments. The policies and investments we've secured are improving the lives of more than 5.6 million children. We work to close the nation's pervasive achievement gap and to focus on passing strong policies on the state and local level that will ensure all children, regardless of where they were
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Oregon State Affilate
We are a family of parents, teachers, community leaders and education advocates that will not rest until every student in Oregon has access to a world-class education that prepares them for life beyond the classroom, whether their path leads to college, a career, or both.
Arizona State Affiliate
Stand Arizona focuses its work on the highest impact policy areas that are research-backed, proven to work, and will make the biggest difference for kids.
Arizona is in crisis when it comes to educating our children with 60% of our 3rd graders unable to read on grade level making us 45th in the country in 4th grade reading (an important indicator of a student's future success).
We will:
-Address Arizona's reading crisis through policy and funding options
Increasing funding for Early Literacy Grants
-Tie school performance funding to measurable, transparent achievement data
-Provide parents with the tools they need to address chronic absenteeism, which is one of the key factors contributing to the achievement gap between low income and higher income students
-Improve the pathway for young children entering school prepared to learn basic skills
Colorado State Affiliate
Stand Colorado advocates for effective solutions to our education problems that benefit thousands of children today. To ensure that we continue the fight and maximize our collective impact across Colorado, we’re focused on key, high-impact policies for how to accomplish our mission of effectively closing the achievement gap.
Illinois State Affiliate
Stand Illinois believes our country’s failure to prepare kids for productive adulthood is a persistent civil rights issue that poses a grave economic challenge to American prosperity and productivity. One look at the academic success of our global competitors is proof positive.
Access to a quality public education is a basic human right – one we are dedicated to protecting. Stand for Children works across the state – from the classroom to the Capitol – to mobilize the citizens of Illinois around a common goal of improving the odds for American children.
Indiana State Affiliate
Stand Indiana has worked to identify local education challenges, research data-proven solutions, and advocate for implementing those ideas that are working to improve educational outcomes. To ensure that we continue the fight and maximize our collective impact, we developed a set of standards and high-impact policies for how to accomplish our mission of ensuring every child gets a great education.
Louisiana State Affiliate
Stand for Children Louisiana brings together parents, educators, and community members to join in the important work of fighting for great, student-focused education policies. Together we have supported and helped elect local school board leaders, Louisiana legislators, and Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education members who are focused on students and ensuring their success. We have continued to help protect higher standards and aligned assessments for the students of Louisiana.
Washington State Affiliate
Stand for Children Washington works to advance public education, empower parents, and elect courageous leaders.
We believe all children deserve an equal opportunity to succeed in life. Education is the key that unlocks the door to success, but far too many children, through no fault of their own, aren’t getting the education they need to make it in life. At Stand for Children, we are passionately committed to righting this wrong, so that all children, regardless of their background, can graduate from high school prepared for and with access to college or career training.
Tennessee State Affiliate
Since 1999, Stand members in Tennessee have won 23 state and local victories leveraging more than $150 million in public funding for schools and other programs serving more than 1,383,303 children. Our objectives are to improve Tennessee schools and achieve legislative and electoral victories for our students.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
For 20 years, we have advocated for better and equitable education standards for all children.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Stand influences change by utilizing a strong three-pillared approach: Parents, Politics, and Policy. The effectiveness of this approach, coupled with organizing and empowering parents and community, has led to countless policy, legislation, election and budget wins across our eleven states.
Our states have also worked independently to identify local challenges facing children, to figure out what's working across the nation, and to advocate for effective solutions that continue to benefit millions of children today. To ensure that we continue the fight and maximize our collective impact, we developed a set of standards for how to accomplish our mission of effectively closing the achievement gap.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Stand operates at all levels, engaging with families, educating and empowering them to speak up for their children's needs, collaborating with the schools and districts to implement changes, and legislators for systemic shifts to education culture.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
A small sampling of victories for kids over the last 20 years:
Quality Pre-K for all - Stand Tennessee helped to create, expand, and protect Tennessee's voluntary pre-K program, which serves over 18,600 students in 935 classrooms across 135 districts statewide
Reading by 3rd Grade – Stand Colorado helped to pass The READ Act to ensure interventions are available for early readers who need support.
Strong teachers and leaders - Stand Texas 140-member Educator Network in Dallas spent nine months working with Dallas Independent School District's (DISD) staff and educating teachers and the community about DISD's Teacher Excellence Initiative (TEI)—the district's proposed teacher evaluation and strategic compensation model initiative.
Stand Oregon advocated for a strong teacher and principal mentorship program that has trained over 500 new teachers and principals in Oregon receive high quality mentoring every year, and 7-year retention rates for the mentored teachers and principals are 94%, compared to less than 50% nationally.
High Standards and Expectations for our students: Stand offices protected high academic standards by defending misguided legislative attacks on Common Core in Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, Tennessee and Massachusetts.
Access to High Quality Schools: Stand Indiana members were tireless advocates for HEA 1321 which allowed for low-performing Indianapolis Public Schools to have a turnaround policy focused on building quality options in all Indianapolis neighborhoods.
Longer School Day – Stand Illinois advocated for a longer school day year for the Chicago Public Schools, which had the shortest school day in the nation, added 90 minutes per day and two weeks per year of instruction for just under 400,000 students.
Academic Acceleration – Stand Washington championed the passage of legislation that provides support to high schools that adopt a policy to enroll every qualified student into advanced classes (such as AP or International Baccalaureate), increasing the number of students taking advanced classes by 196%.
