Mission Statement

The Daniel Pearl Foundation promotes tolerance and understanding internationally through journalism, music and dialogue. Formed by Danny's family and friends to continue Danny's mission of connecting people through words and music, the Foundation addresses the root causes of the hatred that took his life through education and communication. The Foundation brings journalists and editors from Muslim countries to U.S. newsrooms and uses the universal language of music to promote Harmony for Humanity through the Daniel Pearl World Music Days. Additionally, the Foundation conducts public Muslim- Jewish dialogue and features lectures by journalists and policy makers who contributed original analysis or constructive approaches to problems of national or international concern.

1. In October of 2010, the Daniel Pearl World Music Days included 1643 concerts in 84 countries dedicated to “Harmony for Humanity.” Thousands of musicians and millions of people around the world took a stand for tolerance and humanity. 2. Ethics and integrity in journalism can impact thousands of hearts and minds. The Foundation offer fellowship to mid-career journalists and editors from Muslim countries to spend time in U.S. Newsrooms. We are proud of the Daniel Pearl Fellows achievements: Fasih Ahmed (2003), Editor of Newsweek Pakistan. Ammara Durrani (2005), Strategic Aide to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in Pakistan. Walid Al-Saqaf (2005), TED fellowship recipient for his innovative technology, Alkasir, to thwart internet censorship in the Arab World. Mahim Maher (2008), the Karachi City Editor for The Express, She blogs for the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles. Utku Cakirozer(2008), Bureau Chief of Cumhuriyet in Ankara. Umar Cheema (2008), recently kidnapped, tortured and intimidated for writing against the government in Pakistan. He stood up to the authorities in a highly publicized case. The State Department, per the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Bill, is following up with the Pakistani authorities.

Ruth is a graduate of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, and came to the United States with her husband, Judea Pearl, the President of the Daniel Pearl Foundation, in 1960 to do graduate work. She holds a Master?s Degree in Electrical Engineering and worked for twenty years as a computer software consultant. Ruth Pearl and her husband, Judea Pearl, are co-editors of the book I Am Jewish: Personal Reflections Inspired by the Last Words of Daniel Pearl, (2004), winner of the 2004 National Jewish Book Award for Anthologies.

Leadership Statement:

The story of Danny's life and death has touched thousands of people who never knew him. By developing original programs, the Daniel Pearl Foundation hopes to bring light to the world the way Danny did through his stories and music. In that spirit, the Foundation has undertaken several projects, including: Music, Journalism and Lectures/Dialogues. The Daniel Pearl Foundation draws its income from Public Donations, Speaking fees, grants and royalties from books. It is supported by pro-bono work of many professionals, in addition to Interns and volunteers. The Foundation funds its programs, employees and administrative cost from its income.
