Mission Statement

The American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) is dedicated to an understanding of all aspects of Egyptian history and culture up to the present. To these ends, ARCE promotes scholarly research and the dissemination of its results; encourages cultural and academic ties among its members and their Egyptian counterparts; and fosters broader knowledge and appreciation of Egypt and its culture among the general public.

Dr. Gerry D. Scott, III Scott has been the ARCE Director since 2003 and is an Egyptologist, art historian, former museum curator, and recent Director of the San Antonio Museum of Art. Dr. Scott oversees the Cairo staff and its work with Egyptian authorities and institutions and the U.S. business/membership office in San Antonio.

Program Description:

Restoration and Conservation - ARCE carries out conservation projects at sites representing a variety of cultural periods including Pharaonic, Islamic, and Coptic.

Over 50 conservation projects have been conducted throughout Egypt.

Conservation efforts are managed by the Associate Director of Egyptian Antiquities Project (EAP). Because much of the funding comes from federal sources, regular reports are provided to USAID.

Program Description:

Over the course of five decades, ARCE’s fellowship program has benefited more than six hundred scholars, whose research interests span the diversity of Egypt’s periods and cultures. The goal of ARCE’s fellowship program is to promote a more profound knowledge of Egypt and the Near East through study and research and to aid in the training of American specialists in academic disciplines that require familiarity with Egypt. The annual competition for ARCE pre-doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships attracts applicants from throughout the United States. Collectively, the publications resulting from ARCE fellowships constitute a substantial library that includes a sizable portion of all scholarly output on Egypt by Americans since 1957.

Program Long-Term Success:

Program alumni include directors and faculty of Middle Eastern studies departments at leading universities in the United States and abroad, and curators of Egyptian and Near Eastern art at major museums and research institutions. Some two hundred doctoral dissertations have been made possible as a result of research conducted under ARCE’s auspices.

Program Description:

The Annual Meeting provides an opportunity for ARCE members and the general public to hear about the latest scholarship on Egypt and network with professionals in the field. Each of the three days is broken out into concurrent speaker sessions, during which scholars and expedition leaders present their research findings, or discuss the latest developments in their projects. Chapters throughout the U.S. receive program support from ARCE. Tours and lectures are hosted by ARCE in Egypt.
