Mission Statement
Turnaround closes the achievement gap by bringing about breakthrough improvements in publicly-funded schools serving high-poverty communities.
Children living in poverty encounter barriers to learning and disruptions to healthy development arising from the adversity they face in their homes and communities. For five-to-ten percent of children, the result is anti-social behavior that disrupts learning for all students and consumes considerable teacher and administrator time.
Accordingly, high poverty schools that lack the knowledge, skills and systems to address these barriers are generally characterized by frequent disruptions, ineffective teaching and low student achievement.
Schools that learn how to systematically address these barriers undergo a profound transformation in their culture, unlocking the potential of both teachers and children to learn and excel.
The Turnaround Intervention helps educators to transform their schools by building systems, creating effective linkages to services, and embedding the knowledge and skills that are essential for school staff to create optimal conditions for teaching, learning and healthy youth development.

Program Description:
The Turnaround Intervention is a whole-school transformation process, carried out in partnership with the principal, that re-designs the school to enable the building of the culture and systems necessary to support effective teaching, successful learning and sustainable improvement.
Over a two-to-three-year period, a team of senior educators and social workers from Turnaround provides extensive training and coaching for school staff and models how to operate effective problem solving teams within the school.
The intervention begins by targeting services to the highest-need, hardest-to-reach students, signaling a profound change in the school and a dedication to helping all students succeed.
Linkages are created between these teams and child-serving agencies in the community.
The new systems and skills become embedded in the schools and Turnaround is ultimately able to withdraw, leaving behind a transformed environment.
