The objective of a Drop In Center program is to identify and engage persons who may choose not to participate in more structured programs or who might not otherwise avail themselves of mental health services, and to provide services and supports in a manner, which these individuals would accept. These programs are low demand, flexible and relatively unstructured, and responsive to individual need and circumstance. The objective of Life Skills program is to assist individuals disabled by mental illness to develop or reestablish a sense of self-esteem and group affiliation, and to promote their recovery from mental illness and their reintegration into a meaningful role in community life through the provision of two or more of the following: (1) consumer self-help and empowerment interventions; (2) community living: (3) academic; (4) vocational and/or (5) social-leisure time rehabilitation, training and support services. The objective of Vocational Training is to strengthen the individual's work record and work skills toward the goal of achieving assisted or unassisted competitive employment at or above the minimum wage paid by the competitive sector employer. TEP's provide time-limited employment and on-the-job training in one or more integrated employment settings as an integral part of the individual's vocational rehabilitation growth.

Program Description:
On October 22, 2012, Hurricane Sandy affected the communities of Long Island. The nature of the flooding event has created a situation in which many communities have been substantially adversely impacted. As indicated in the need assessment and narrative describing the impact of the disaster, the most immediate need is to reach out to these specific communities, and, in particular, to individuals with destroyed homes or homes sustaining major damage. As demonstrated in previous natural disasters, special needs groups must be given priority; in the communities impacted by this disaster, these groups include farmers and elderly individuals with disabilities who reside within the hardest hit areas of the counties. Adelante of Suffolk County Inc., entered into contract with Research Foundation for Mental Health, Inc., in the amount of $170,343 to provide crisis counseling to the residents of Brentwood, Central Islip and other Hispanic communities of Suffolk County. It is our responsibility to help this underserved population identify the emotional, physical and resurgences of past traumas they may have experienced due to Hurricane Sandy. Our crisis counselors will visit areas where Hispanics live, work, shop, worship and play, such as the consulates, grocery stores, schools, Hispanic veterans associations, recreational areas, senior centers that provide services to their community.
