MRNY wins legal and legislative victories that have a lasting, positive impact in low-income communities and we deliver vital services to thousands of community members. In 2009, MRNY:<br /><ul><li>Won landmark civil rights complaints against the state&#8217;s seven largest pharmacy chains, requiring translation and interpretation services at 3000 pharmacies, and passed the Language Access in Pharmacies Act to require these services at every chain pharmacy in the city.</li><li>Catalyzed $9 million of public investment to support parental and student leadership inside our city&#8217;s schools.</li><li>Won more than $9 million in illegally withheld wages and benefits for low-income immigrants and launched innovative, industry-focused labor law enforcement collaborations with the NYS Department of Labor.</li><li>Launched a Community Workforce Development Program to provide job readiness, placement support, specialized job skills trainings, and small business and worker cooperative incubation.</li><li>Helped 1,162 adults learn English, develop literacy and computer skills, earn a GED or become citizens.</li><li>Became a citywide leader of the effort to combat hate crimes, organizing forums and mobilizations, designing legislation to improve hate crime reporting, and ensuring implementation of the Respect for All school curricula.</li><li>Ran a food pantry serving more than 19,000 people and provided assistance in accessing healthcare and public benefits to thousands more.<br /></li></ul>

Profile:

Deborah supervises MRNY&#8217;s Services Departments (Health Access, Legal, Adult Literacy &amp; Workforce Development), as well as our finance, HR, information technology and development operations. After leading the successful campaign to pass the <em>Wage Theft Prevention Act</em> in 2010, Deborah is also leading MRNY&#8217;s workplace justice organizing and policy work. Deborah first came to Make the Road as a summer intern in 2000 and joined the staff full-time in 2002 as Staff Attorney for Workplace Justice. In August 2004 she was asked to build a centralized Legal Department at MRNY. She began the department with a staffing of two persons, herself and a temporary advocate placed at MRNY by the Jesuit Volunteer Corps; under her leadership, the department has grown to employ 18 full time advocates and attorneys covering the full range of poverty law issue areas. In the summer of 2009, Deborah became Deputy Director, taking over supervision of all of the services departments. Deborah graduated <em>magna cum laude</em> from the Georgetown University Law Center in 2001. She worked for four years as a union and community organizer before law school, serving on the leadership teams of industry-wide initiatives in West Palm Beach, Florida; Los Angeles, California; and New Orleans, Louisiana. She also teaches Civil Litigation and co-leads the Law, Organizing, and Social Change Clinic at the New York University law school. She is the mom of Elijah and Zoe.

<div>Our Department of Legal &amp; Support Services engages entire families, with a coordinated attack on the interconnected web of problems that poor families face. Where basic survival needs are unmet, we provide an emergency food pantry, and deliver full meals to the corners where homeless day laborers congregate. Where specialized expertise is called for, our attorneys and advocates provide full representation before government agencies and courts. Where families trust peers best &#8211; as with efforts to reduce HIV, obesity, and heart disease &#8211; our peer health educators and member-run Community Supported Agriculture program intervene to provide education, trusted medical testing, support, and access to healthy foods.<br /></div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div>

Through legal advocacy, MRNY attorneys won $6.5 million dollars for exploited workers. Our weekly food pantry helped 150 families meet nutritional needs and our Community Supported Agriculture program provided organic, local produce to 54 families. We conducted an enforcement sting on local retail shops that won over $500,000 for exploited workers and filed a labor law complaint that led to the arrest of two abusive supermarket owners.

Program Description:

MRNY brings low-income New Yorkers together to promote civil-rights, economic justice, and access opportunities. The organizing work gives voice to thousands, build community, and wins major public-policy victories.

In 2008:<br /> <ul> <li>MRNY helped pass the <em>Tenant Protection Act</em>, which creates serious consequences for landlords who unlawfully push tenants out of rent-regulated housing.</li> <li>Our Voter Power Project registered 5,700 new voters and mobilized 25,000 voters to the polls.</li> <li>MRNY won an Executive Order requiring all New York City agencies to provide comprehensive translation and interpretation services to those with limited English proficiency.</li> <li>MRNY filed a complaint with the State Attorney General&#8217;s office that led the City to require its seven largest pharmacy chains to provide translation services for medication and counseling.</li> </ul>

Program Description:

MRNY offers rigorous in-school, after-school, and summer programs to support college readiness, foster civic engagement, and develop leadership. We have helped design and open two schools dedicated to these goals: the Bushwick School for Social Justice (BSSJ) and the Pan American International High School (PAIHS).

In 2008:<br /> <ul> <li>MRNY began its second successful year partnering with PAIHS, which specializes in serving recently arrived immigrants, one of the highest-need groups in the school system.</li> </ul> <ul> <li>For the second year in a row, BSSJ earned an &#8220;A&#8221; on the City&#8217;s school progress report and graduated over 70% of students, more than triple the rate of the pre-existing school.</li> </ul> <ul> <li>The Bushwick Student Success Center (SSC), which we opened in fall 2007, supported 750 students with college searches, essay writing, financial aid, and general academic concerns.</li> </ul>
