Mission Statement

Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual's income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence. We believe that respect and value for diversity in all aspects of our organization are essential to our well-being. Based on these beliefs, and reflecting the diverse communities within which we operate, the mission of Planned Parenthood is: to provide comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services in settings which preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual; to advocate public policies which guarantee these rights and ensure access to such services; to provide educational programs which enhance understanding of individual and societal implications of human sexuality; to promote research and the advancement of technology in reproductive health care and encourage understanding of their inherent bioethical, behavioral, and social implications.

Evidence of Impact

Planned Parenthood is one of the largest as well as leading organizations in the women’s reproductive health field. They are remaining one of the key health service providers in the country. They offer high quality educational programming, resource services for reproductive and sexual health and advocacy. Their goal is to ensure affordability and access to healthcare providers for everyone regardless of their socio-economic standing. Many experts also praise the organization’s ability to innovate for greater outreach. They push for change with their campaigns while standing behind pro-choice legislators’ political platform. Working wih governmental bodies on the national level, they effectively promote women’s health rights.

Established Leadership
They are the 'grandma' of service delivery and advocacy, they are at the front lines and have terrific public leadership. Other
Serving Youth
This is the most important service organization for women's reproductive health in the USA. It is especially important in serving youth and the underserved. Researcher and Faculty
Influences National Women's Health Policy
No other organization in the field has had the public impact that this organization has had over the last few years. Providing evidence-based and affordable health care to women with dignity and respect is only one aspect of the organization's impact. The other is the unbelievable reach the organization has had into the media, both mainstream and social, and the skill with which it has cultivated this notoriety in the past few years. I doubt there is a single person in the U.S. who is not aware of Planned Parenthood. Other
Their solid and respected name and advocacy has become a focal point in the movement to protect women's health. Their messaging research is extremely useful and relied upon by the whole community. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California – esp. Kathy Kneer. Has changed the face of pro-choice activism, taken big risks and influenced politics outside of California - especially around finding creative way to meet people where they are, bring down the heat and have wins, even though they are quiet. Nonprofit Senior Staff
PPFA's PAC had more return on investment than many of the rightwing PACs during the last election. PPFA put more pro-choice legislators into office and prevented anti-choice candidates from getting elected. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Planned Parenthood remains the most important service provider to low- and moderate-income people in the nation, and in that role it contributes significantly to setting medical standards in the field. In addition, it has a strong and active presence in federal legislation and policy. Other
PPFA is the leading organization in the US that is supporting millions of women and men with reproductive health care. They have good contact with President Obama, congress and in many states. Their online service helps many millions more. Foundation Professional
PPFA is the most well-known and trusted provider group of reproductive health care in the USA. They provide high quality services, and also maintain a strong presence in the communities they serve to educate the public and shift community perceptions. PPFA is also a key player on the policy and advocacy front, working (often successfully) to battle restrictive reproductive/sexual health policies, and working tirelessly to promote women's rights to legal and safe abortion and to affordable contraception. Nonprofit Senior Staff
PPFA and its affiliates are the most trusted source for healthcare, sexual and reproductive health information, and advocacy in the US. Researcher and Faculty
Impressive Programs
I was a coach for one of the senior managers and was exceptionally impressed by her programs, ability and grasp of the needs of the issues. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Commitment to Serve Underserved Areas
PPFA has consistent leadership on issues related to reproductive health and health care for low-income populations. PPFA is committed to serving in underserved areas, like its Southern Access Project. Nonprofit Senior Staff
PPFA affiliates and health centers provide vital health services to thousands of women across the country. In addition, their policy work is critical. Researcher and Faculty
Excellent Media Coverage
Outreach to Youth and Men
Primary Care Focus
This is a small organization with a big impact that has a unique place in the field. They have strong leadership and a great clinical team. They focus on integrating contraception and abortion into primary care - a key strategy to ensuring that everyone has access to this care. No other organization is really focusing on the role primary care has in women's health. Their clinical tools are excellent. In order to fully realize their potential they need to grow, expand their training capabilities and possibly focus more on policy work. Nonprofit Senior Staff

Organizational Strengths

Planned Parenthood enjoys high credibility. Its reputation is evidenced in their creative leadership, specifically in Cecile Richards, and dedicated staff. They have a broad outreach even to the most isolated areas in the US. Through their stable work they have improved health conditions for many women and men. With focused strategic planning, the organization is responsive to new research in reproductive health and able to incorporate new knowledge in their advocacy efforts. PP is continuously committed to its vision.

Name Recognition
They have name recognition, political savvy, and clinical excellence. Other
Strong Advocacy Work
I think the advocacy work and media presence of PPFA is impressive and this is definitely one of the most impactful organizations working on reproductive justice in the US. Researcher and Faculty
They have strong advocacy and they're mission-driven. Other strengths include staff competency and guidance at national level for PP affiliates - standards, quality assurance. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Political Leadership
They have great political leadership and a wide presence in the US. They are also the leading provider of key reproductive health services. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Impressive Leadership
I have been impressed with the leadership of the national organization, both the CEO (the lead political team) and the medical directors. The behind-the-scenes work that the organization does to ensure that its clinics are providing quality, evidence-based health care is beyond what most health care organizations do. Other
They have a risk-taking Executive Director as well as stellar allies and network building. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Cecile Richards is a savvy and effective leader. She is a great spokesperson for our movement who is well connected with the highest echelons of political power. Vanessa Cullins is the ideal provider spokesperson. She is speaks clearly and compellingly about clinical issues in a way that resonates with and can be understood by those who are not medical experts. Nonprofit Senior Staff
PPFA is well led by Cecile Richards who has a national presence as well as international. It has a strong staff team and is respected by millions of women and men around the country. It has affiliates operating in every state with talented and helpful staff dealing with reproductive health, cancer, pre-natal care, STDs and other care. Foundation Professional
PPFA has done an incredible job with branding over the past decade or so. Cecile Richards is a dynamic and tireless leader, who goes to great lengths to be visible (representing PPFA and the reproductive rights movement) and to be a spokesperson for women's rights around the world. Nonprofit Senior Staff
PPFA has strong national leadership, a highly committed Board, dedicated volunteers, and excellent local representation (PPFA chapters). Nonprofit Senior Staff
Cecile Richards is a major strength! They also have an excellent communications department. Researcher and Faculty
They have excellent leadership. Researcher and Faculty
Cecile Richards is an exceptional and charismatic leader. PPFA is the broadest spokesperson for sexual and reproductive health and rights. Cecile Richards is an exemplary leader and a passionate, charismatic, and unwavering voice. Nonprofit Senior Staff
In Cecile, PPFA seems from the outside to have a strong leader. PPFA is still looked to for leadership, and it fulfills that promise. Tackling tough issues like "reframing choice" with Not In Her Shoes was courageous and faced their vulnerabilities head on. Other
They have strong staff. Their leadership is obviously strong as well- Cecile Richards has a national profile. But their breadth and depth of staffs both at the national office and in most affiliates is truly impressive. Foundation Professional
PPFA has a strong, charismatic and strategic leader who significantly strengthened the organization and increased its financial health. She and her team successfully fought congressional restrictions on their funding in 2012 and continue to do so. Foundation Professional
Because the locals are generally associated with individual states, the national voice of the Federation's leaders is particularly needed - and the present leadership meets that responsibility at a consistently high level. The Federation also has a major task in guaranteeing the efficacy and reliability of the local affiliate’s clinical services - a strong supportive and leadership role. Researcher and Faculty
They have strong charismatic leadership. PPFA's influence has exploded in the past five years culminating in President Obama coming to speak at their annual meeting. Foundation Professional
The strengths are both in its leadership and staff team. Cecile and her staff are talented, smart and the best in their fields. In addition, PPFA - because of the breadth and variety of its work -- is expert in all areas of the reproductive health world. Finally, they have the greatest reach of any reproductive organization right now. Other
They have strong marketing and leadership. Researcher and Faculty
Their strengths are the boots on the ground as well as the strategic leadership of Cecile Richards. The size and scope of the membership is also a strength. Researcher and Faculty
They have a great leader and senior staff members. They have credibility of policy and service. Researcher and Faculty
Data Led Advocacy
Being providers and advocates gives them insight and credibility. Their advocacy is informed by data and research as to what works and they run a very smart political/policy operation. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Community Outreach
Planned Parenthood's greatest asset is its reach into communities across the country where services are needed. Other
Strong Organizational Strategy
They have strong vision, scope, and ability to understand the nuances of difficult issues. Nonprofit Senior Staff
The scope of the organization is a major strength. They are in many ways the face of the movement and can set the tone. They also have impressive political power, as evidenced by their influence during the last election cycle. Researcher and Faculty
PPFA is well organized and able to leverage stakeholders effectively. They have strong leadership in ensuring high quality reproductive and sexual health services by participating in national workgroups and committees to set practice standards. Other
Leadership, commitment, focus on mission. I think focus on mission must be PPMM's biggest organizational strength, because when I visit the health centers, I meet health center staff who have been there for 15 years or more (this is not uncommon) and sometimes more -- the longest tenure was 29 years. AND, these people are still passionate about their work, and PPMM's mission. Foundation Professional
Great Network of Affiliates
Their affiliates are a key strength. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Effective Watchdog
Planned Parenthood is vital everywhere, but here in NC they have been forced to be constantly vigilante against all forms of bigotry and forces against the health and well-being of women. Researcher and Faculty
Strong Leadership
They have strong leadership and innovative/strategic thinking. Researcher and Faculty

Areas for Improvement

According to some experts, Planned Parenthood could share some of its wins with other organizations. This would help for further collaborative projects and strengthen inter-organizational relationships. As a large organization, they need more resources to sustain its involvement in a broad spectrum of issues on the state as well as on the federal level. Furthermore, as it often happens by default, large organizations have to fight against becoming too bureaucratic. Sometimes this can be an obstacle in effectively reacting to new information.

Reconsider Strategy
They provide some great leadership nationally. There is also some concern about their lack of responsibility around their role in undermining later abortion access. This may take some explaining, because it's not a point of view widely understood. They are a huge organization, but many of their affiliates end up undermining the financial sustainability of outstanding later abortion providers by opening "competing" clinics that don't provide abortions as far along in gestation. As a result, some of the independent providers struggle to remain able to provide services at all, because they don't have enough volume at earlier gestations to remain in existence for the later abortions that women need. Planned Parenthood needs to be more conscientious at a national level to dissuade affiliates from ending up being predatory in their impact on some fine and longstanding independent clinics. They instead should focus their abortion provision outreach into underserved communities/towns. Other
Size is Burdensome
Their size is a strength, but also a burden. Makes it harder to change and respond. That's my criticism, this organization is not responsive enough to changing circumstances. Focus is too narrow. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Improve Partnerships
I had a negative experiences as a coalition partner. They have an international program, which they've never really managed to own as an organization. A couple of years ago there was a big, exciting splash about the int'l program's "scalable and replicable" model for SRHR programs in developing countries, but I've never been able to find any studies supporting this claim and they're quite discredited in my view. Other
Share Victories
The organization tends to take credit for others' achievements, primarily I think because they are given the soapbox when others are not because of how well-known they are. Management at the level of some individual affiliates could be improved as well. Other
They could give other organizations (partners, less known entities) more credit and national profile when appropriate. I have also seen some unevenness in fundraising operations; they have slow or inadequate development staff follow-up. This is normal in a huge organization, but some effort to be more responsive and more proactive could help. Foundation Professional
The organization is self-serving and often has little regard for other nonprofits that provide abortion and other reproductive health services. They seem to "eat their own" insofar as there's a lot of turnover among higher level staff. Researcher and Faculty
More Capacity
They could put significantly more time and resources into the states and linking it to the national conversation -- the folks doing their state work are fantastic but should have quadruple the resources and more capacity on the ground. Because their own survival is so critical and must be a priority, there at times is tension between that priority and the need to push the conversation on abortion. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Self-Care Practices
I would love to see some self-care practices there, internally. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Better Collaboration
I debated whether to list PPFA, since the organization is a behemoth in the field and many in our movement are critical of its tactics. But I couldn't get around the impact they had in the last election. The biggest criticism I hear of PPFA is that they think they are the only game in town (this applies to affiliates as well). This makes them not always the easiest group to work with. Many people say that Cecile Richards should say abortion more; I agree. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Less Bureaucracy
PPFA is a giant bureaucracy and has many of the pitfalls associated with that. They are slow to make decisions and sometimes overly cautious in the positions they take. At the same time, its far-flung network of providers vary tremendously in quality and are often unresponsive to attempts to drive improvements from the national office. PPFA needs to work on nation-wide quality control in services and cohesiveness in policy and messaging. Other
Because of its size, it can be a little difficult to work with at times - it is sometimes bureaucratic. Other
Continue Online Resources
PPFA has developed an online system so that anyone can call for advice from the US to talk in English or Spanish. This program is good, however it needs continuing development. Foundation Professional
It's complicated but they need to successfully implement mobile online scheduling. Wait times at health centers has gotten better but it is still too long in some places. Flow can be improved. Foundation Professional
Improve Communications
Their communications efforts and campaigns sometimes seem to fall a little short resulting in less impact than they could potentially have, if managed more consistently and effectively. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They could improve by making reproductive health more of an issue in the media. This is a way to engage a younger generation of advocates to take on these battles and challenges in the future. Nonprofit Senior Staff
As always, PPFA could improve its image and support from the middle-of-the-road politicians. For an organization providing so much prenatal care, the fact that Planned Parenthoods are still the target of conservatives is mind-boggling. Other
They could enhance their marketing and public relations -- at least as far as reaching donors/supporters is concerned. They could also use more/better newsletter communications and more community education/outreach events with PPMM's name on them, just to elevate awareness of their contribution to communities. That said, I'd want the organization to take this on only if it is expected to result in increased donations that more than pay for the effort and opportunity costs. Foundation Professional
They should realize they represent the moderate position and leave some space for the left flank to be heard. Researcher and Faculty
Broader Outreach
They could use greater outreach. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They could be more proactive on abortion; not shy away from supporting abortion rights and access. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They could improve by helping people understand that they are not only about abortion. Researcher and Faculty
They could widen their vision and integrate abortion better into services at all sites. Researcher and Faculty
Rigid Policies
They are reluctant to allow trainees into their clinics. This is particularly damaging in areas where they are the highest volume abortion provider nearby. They sometime make decisions in contrast to medical evidence that make sense for them as an organization that have a negative impact on the field. For example, their choice to change the medication abortion protocols after the related infections a few years ago were not based on data and had a chilling effect the perceived safety of the drugs. Researcher and Faculty
I have the feeling that PPFA has become more medical and less philosophically oriented in its culture, and I think a mix of both is important. All staff members who work at PPFA, in my opinion, should be supportive of women's right to abortion, which is not the case now. Being under attack for so long has forced PPFA to become more conservative. Instead of focusing on risk so much, to the extent possible, keep the heart of what PPFA has always been: an innovator and the heart of the movement. Researcher and Faculty
More Finances
Because of the changing health care environment, PPFA has faced some financial challenges in their efforts to open new clinics and serve at-risk populations. Other
Diversify Leadership
They should diversify leadership at national and affiliate level so that it better represents the women they are serving. Foundation Professional
Open to New Strategies
I suggest they unite into one organization at the state level, rather than 3. Researcher and Faculty
