Program Description:
The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State, provides scholarships for secondary school students (age 15-17) from countries with significant Muslim populations to spend up to one academic year in the United States.
Program Long-Term Success:
The Kennedy-Lugar YES Program evolved out of a generalized recognition that public diplomacy efforts had been neglected in many countries around the world for many years and that the effects of this came into stark focus in the aftermath of the events of September 11, 2001. Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs U.S. Department of State, along with the U.S. exchange community, recognized the importance of youth exchange as a key component of renewed commitment to building bridges between citizens of the U.S. and countries around the world, particularly those with significant Muslim populations. The program has successful exchanged more than 5,000 youth since 2003.

National Security Language Initiative for Youth
- Budget:
-
$1,700,000
- Category:
-
International, Foreign Affairs & National Security
- Population Served:
-
Youth/Adolescents only (14 - 19 years)
Program Description:
The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y), sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, provides full, merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs.
Program Long-Term Success:
Since its inception in 2006, the NSLI-Y program has experienced dramatic growth in the number of languages taught and the number of scholarships offered. From 2006 through 2008, NSLI-Y offered study abroad opportunities in only two languages: Arabic and Chinese (Mandarin). In these three years, approximately 330 American high school students studied Arabic and Chinese on short-term, summer programs. Today, the program has expanded to offer summer and academic year programs to learn Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajik), Russian, and Turkish. By the end of the 2011-12 program year, nearly 2,000 students will proudly call themselves NSLI-Y alumni.
