Mission Statement

The Hebrew Free Burial Association devotes its resources to performing "chesed shel emet" (the ultimate act of loving kindess). It is the only agency in the New York City metropolitan are dedicated to assuring every Jew, regardless of financial means or religious affiliation, receives a dignified, traditional Jewish funeral and burial.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

In 2010 HFBA provided burials for 344 Jewish people of all ages who either didn't have the funds or family or friends to provide for their final needs. The number of burials we have arranged has increased dramatically over the past 4 years. We attribute our increased caseload to the economic recession. People who would not have needed our services 5 years ago are in a more vulnerable position now. Our goal for 2011 going forward is the same as our original 1888 mission - to provide our crucial services for individuals and families at a time of personal tragedy in their lives.
