Tuberculosis Treatment and Prevention Project(TBTP)
- Budget:
-
$200,000
- Category:
-
Diseases, Disorders & Medical Disciplines
- Population Served:
-
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged, Indigent, General
Program Description:
Tuberculosis is one of the world's most contagious and deadly diseases. Approximately one-third of the world's population has been exposed to TB. Once exposed, these individuals carry a latent infection that can later develop into active TB. Each year there are nearly 9 million new cases of active TB and close to 2 million deaths from TB or related complications. The majority of afflictions are among individuals between 15 and 59 years, thereby depriving families and communities of their most productive members.
Two of Prajnopaya’s strengths are ingenuity and speed. Unencumbered by an expensive bureaucracy, the Foundation quickly distributes all its donations to where they are needed. The Foundation’s staff has been adept in forging partnerships with helpful institutions, in mobilizing volunteer health care providers and other dedicated individuals, and in figuring out ways to obtain needed medicines at discounted rates.

Program Description:
Following the catastrophic tsunami in Asia the death toll keeps rising and people are facing severe shortages of food, shelter, and clothing. Many children have been orphaned and have no one to take care of them. View this as a great opportunity to extend help and practice generosity.
One of the issues that always concern us is whether or not our contributions reach those who are suffering. Therefore the Prajnopaya Foundation has formed an alliance with the Sri Bodhiraja Foundation in Sri Lanka to collect funds for construction of 1,000 houses for the poor population in the villages, regardless of their religious affiliation or ethnic background. This collaborative effort has already raised about US $200,000. Please consider sponsoring the construction of a house (US $3,400) or part of one. The prices for construction have gone up from its initial cost of US $1,200 due to a more than 200% increase in the cost of construciton materials and contractors, reflecting the demand in a post-tsunami Sri Lanka. You can also donate funds for food for the victims. We have been informed that, at this point, people have received ample clothing.

Program Description:
Every year, an estimated 8-10 million people contract tuberculosis (TB) and 1.7 million die from the disease, mostly in poor, rural communities in the developing world. This is despite the fact that TB can be completely cured in most cases via antibiotics, which governments usually provide free of cost to the needy. The central challenge continues to be drug adherence: ensuring that patients take the right drugs regularly for the entire course of 6-8 months.
Direct Observation Therapy (DOT), where a worker supervises ingestion of every dose, is a successful strategy to ensure adherence. However, it is costly and logistically challenging to run a labor intensive program in geographically dispersed rural communities with poor infrastructure. Thus, 2 out of 3 patients today do not have access to DOT.
