Mission Statement
Green Worker Cooperatives is a South-Bronx based organization dedicated to incubating worker-owned green businesses in order to build a strong local economy rooted in democracy and environmental justice. We train and develop worker cooperatives that have a positive environmental impact and enable the transformation of their members and community.
We value the principles of solidarity and decision-making by those affected by decisions. And we are committed to contributing to worker cooperative and environmental justice movements around the globe.

Leadership
Omar Freilla
Profile:
Omar
Freilla founded
Green Worker Cooperatives in 2003 out his love for personal and
community transformation and out of his passion for democracy, the
planet, and making another world possible. Omar brings to his
work years of experience organizing for social justice, challenging
environmental racism, and supporting the development of worker-owned
cooperatives. He is a board member of the Democracy At Work Institute
and the Story of Stuff Project. He was a co-curator for the New York
City portion of the BMW Guggenheim Lab, a project of the Solomon R.
Guggenheim Museum. He is a facilitator for Take Back The Bronx
(affiliated with the Occupy movement) and co-founded Papis Unite! His
writings have appeared in numerous books, blogs, and articles and he
has been featured in several documentaries, including Leonardo
DiCaprio’s environmental documentary “The 11th Hour”.
Additionally, he has received numerous awards for his work, including
the Rockefeller Foundation’s Jane Jacobs Medal for New Ideas and
Activism. He holds a Masters degree in Environmental Science from
Miami University of Ohio and a B.S. from Morehouse College where he
founded the organization Black Men for the Eradication of Sexism.
Omar lives in the Bronx where he lives, works, and gardens with his
wife and son.
