Mission Statement
ACN’s focus is on the individual, abandoned child who might be forgotten or ignored without our intervention. We work with in-country NGOs and grassroots organizations to assist abandoned and orphaned children not only to have a home, but also to have access to education, medical care, counseling, and the vocational preparation necessary for them to grow into self-reliant adults.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
<div>*In Tanzania, ACN has become the NGO Friend and Adviser
to the Kilimanjaro branch of the Tanzania Albino Society (TAS) to address the needs of their children. This community has come together because of the murder of people with albinism (PWAs) throughout the country. PWA limbs are sold to be made into charms that are believed to bring good fortune. ACN has funded a headquarters for this partnership in Tanzania's Kilimanjaro region called the "Centre of Hope."<br /></div><div> </div><div>*In Uganda, ACN feeds, pays the school fees for, and vocationally trains children orphaned by Lord's Resistance Army massacres as well as orphaned by disease. <br /></div><div> </div><div>*In Moldova, ACN has worked with abandoned young people vulnerable to the sex and labor slave trade in Moldova. 100% of these ACN-sponsored youth acquired jobs after graduating from vocational training. <br /></div><p> *In Romania, the Independent Living Center started by ACN won the Best Practice Award from Romania’s Ministry of Labor.</p>

Leadership
Dr Frank o. Klein, II
Term:
Since
Jan
2001
Profile:
<p>At the age of 22 he
established a boys' school/home for 75 boys with leprosy. Supervising a
staff of 15, he designed and implemented the curriculum while managing
the day-to-day running of the school. Discovered by the German
Leprosy Relief Association, which paid for his training at a Medical
College Hospital in south India, he was sent to Sikonge
Leprosy Hospital in Tanzania, where he served as Chief Therapist. He was then sent back to India, where he worked as Director of
Rehabilitation for a potential trainee pool of
thousands of leprosy patients, focussing on job
training and development centers, classes for supervisory
staff, and with the help
of his wife, small industry co-operatives, in addition to entrepreneurial
assistance, vocational and
personal counseling, and an adult education scheme for all
workers interested in learning to read and write.</p>
<p> To acquire free tuition for a growing family, he worked as a senior administrator in international schools in Japan and Europe, founding a student service organization that grew into Assisting Children in Need (ACN). </p>
Leadership Statement:
Too many abandoned and orphaned children believe that their circumstances will never
change and that no one cares about them. ACN does care, and with
support their circumstances can change. We can address the
needs of abandoned and orphaned children with life-threatening diseases,
disabilities, or handicapping conditions, as well as the needs of
institutionalized young people who strive for self-care rather than
welfare. While wonderfully different in so many ways, all of these
abandoned children have at least two things in common: they are all
discriminated against in one way or another, and all are children in
need of support.<br />
Feeling alone, it is hard for many abandoned children to make sense of
a world they feel does not care about them. This is where ACN
and its donors step in: making a difficult road more maneuverable for those who find
life's journey too lonely and frustrating. As more and more people
become interested in the work ACN does, what we have accomplished particularly in
Romania, Moldova, Uganda, Bangladesh, and Tanzania becomes possible in other parts of the world, as well.
