Mission Statement

The Campaign for Youth Justice (CFYJ) is a national campaign dedicated to ending the practice of trying, sentencing and incarcerating children under 18 in the adult criminal justice system. The strategic goals of CFYJ are to reduce the number of youth who are tried, sentenced, and incarcerated in the adult criminal justice system, rather than adjudicated in the juvenile justice system; and to decrease the harmful impact of trying youth in adult court, especially the placement of youth in adult jails and prisons.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

Every year, an estimated 200,000 youth are prosecuted in the adult criminal justice system and on any given day, over 10,000 youth languish in adult jails and prisons on a daily basis where they are at risk of assault, abuse and suicide. CFYJ is working to engage youth, parents and families most affected by these harmful laws; to promote research on the negative impacts; to educate national, state and local policymakers; to engage national organizations; to support national coalition building efforts; and to provide a clearinghouse of the latest information, research and contacts to national, state and local stakeholders.

Leadership Statement:

The Campaign for Youth Justice (CFYJ) has launched a national campaign to reexamine the impact of harmful state and federal policies on our nation’s young people and we need your help. Every year, an estimated 200,000 youth are prosecuted in the adult criminal justice system and thousands of youth languish in adult jails on a daily basis where they are at risk of assault, abuse and suicide. Most of these youth are not prosecuted for the most serious offenses, contrary to public perception of youthful offenders tried as adults. Despite the fact that many of the state laws were intended to prosecute the most serious offenders, most youth who are tried in adult courts are there no matter how minor the offense. These punitive policies don’t work. In fact, research shows that they decrease public safety. You can help us to inform policymakers on the negative impacts of these laws on public safety and on our nation’s youth. Our “Justice Challenge” goal is to raise $1 for every youth prosecuted as an adult in the United States every year – 200,000 youth. Please consider an investment today!

Strong Advocacy
It is a behind-the-scenes and consistent effort to push policy reform through convening's, relationship building, and knowledge building. It is also an "infrastructure" organization that sees the big picture, educates policy makers, and is at the ready for coordination of rapid-fire response from its network of organizations, partners, funders, and fellow advocates. Strong Leadership
Leadership is definitely one of its strongest assets. It's also seen as one of the go-to organizations if you want to stay ahead of the curve on juvenile justice issues and get a sense of what to look out for over a 3-5 year horizon. Other
Campaign for Youth Justice benefits from strong leadership. Other
Effective Marketing
Campaign for Youth Justice does a wonderful job of preparing and marketing their materials and resources. They are easily identifiable through the materials and messages they disseminate and they are seemingly everywhere for an organization of very few people. They have also ventured into new areas of dissemination and advocacy, including weekly online radio programs. Finally, the on-the-ground work they do for DC youth sentenced to adult facilities (e.g., book drives, arranging parent visits) is simply amazing. Researcher and Faculty

Areas for Improvement

According to experts, Campaign for Youth Justice could do more with more resources. They must also focus on developing more partnerships as capacity allows.

Advocacy
Perhaps they do this, but it is not as evident, but if Campaign for Youth Justice could start and/or brand State and/or local chapters of the Campaign, the efforts of so many across the country could be more easily united for even great impact. Also, if they could either do more political advocacy or, if they do that, make those efforts more public, that would help others to know the power behind their message. Researcher and Faculty
Focus
The breadth of their focus too narrow and coordination with more partners could be developed as capacity allows. Other
Strategy
I am not sure what their strategy is. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Finances
