Mission Statement
The Campaign for Youth Justice (CFYJ) is a national campaign dedicated to ending the practice of trying, sentencing and incarcerating children under 18 in the adult criminal justice system. The strategic goals of CFYJ are to reduce the number of youth who are tried, sentenced, and incarcerated in the adult criminal justice system, rather than adjudicated in the juvenile justice system; and to decrease the harmful impact of trying youth in adult court, especially the placement of youth in adult jails and prisons.
Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
Every year, an estimated 200,000 youth are prosecuted in the adult criminal justice system and on any given day, over 10,000 youth languish in adult jails and prisons on a daily basis where they are at risk of assault, abuse and suicide. CFYJ is working to engage youth, parents and families most affected by these harmful laws; to promote research on the negative impacts; to educate national, state and local policymakers; to engage national organizations; to support national coalition building efforts; and to provide a clearinghouse of the latest information, research and contacts to national, state and local stakeholders.

Leadership Statement:
The Campaign for Youth Justice (CFYJ) has launched a national campaign to reexamine the impact of harmful state and federal policies on our nation’s young people and we need your help. Every year, an estimated 200,000 youth are prosecuted in the adult criminal justice system and thousands of youth languish in adult jails on a daily basis where they are at risk of assault, abuse and suicide. Most of these youth are not prosecuted for the most serious offenses, contrary to public perception of youthful offenders tried as adults. Despite the fact that many of the state laws were intended to prosecute the most serious offenders, most youth who are tried in adult courts are there no matter how minor the offense. These punitive policies don’t work. In fact, research shows that they decrease public safety. You can help us to inform policymakers on the negative impacts of these laws on public safety and on our nation’s youth. Our “Justice Challenge” goal is to raise $1 for every youth prosecuted as an adult in the United States every year – 200,000 youth. Please consider an investment today!
