Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
Why we do it
More than 12 million African children have lost either one or both parents to HIV/AIDS; this number is expected to grow to 20 million by 2010. Millions more children live in households with sick and dying family members. Although not all children are orphans, the effect of HIV/AIDS on their families and community can make them vulnerable; jeopardizing their emotional well-being, physical security, mental development and overall health.

How we do it
Empower works with in-country partners including CBOs, women’s cooperatives and other grassroots groups in rural communities to create healthy learning environments and strengthen schools’ responses to their most vulnerable learners. Our goal is to provide the schools we serve with a comprehensive Empower Package of support:

Health & Nutrition (daily lunch programs, health education, visiting nurse)
Capacity Building (vocational training, gardening projects, teacher training)
Infrastructure (the construction or repair of classrooms)
Psycho-Social Support (counseling groups)
Water & Sanitation (toilets and water wells)
School Resources (school books, recreational supplies)
Profile:
Andria Sherrow is the founder and Executive Director of EDUCATE Foundation, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to providing educational resources to women and children in impoverished areas around the world. EDUCATE?s main project is The Empower Campaign, the campaign to educate Africa?s orphans and vulnerable children. Andria?s passion to provide educational resources to the vulnerable started with the courage of one child.
While finishing her graduate work in Uganda, Andria volunteered as a teacher at a village school in Uganda. Everyday as she walked to the school she would notice that some of the children on the road didn?t go to school. One boy, Muhebwa Richard, stood out to her in his tattered clothing and his proud, yet needful look. Both of his parents had died of AIDS and Richard had been raising crops on a small plot of land by himself for three years. Richard was 12 years old.
Andria decided then and there to take action. She initiated a grass-roots project with the local village leaders that became the emPOWER Campaign. Since 2004, Empower has helped thousands of orphans pursue an education through our holistic, school based approach. Andria is now based at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and she has succeeded in starting a social movement at OU focused on combating poverty and educating children, while balancing a successful family life. She is an inspiration and mentor to dozens of students who volunteer with Empower throughout the year.
