Master Malick Coulibaly dit Fall
Term:
Since
Feb
2009
Profile:

A Master and world class competitor, Master Fall began studying taekwondo in 1982 in his home country of Mali, West Africa. He was inspired by watching taekwondo training at the nearby Police Academy. His uncle wanted him to do judo, so for almost 2 years, he practiced taekwondo and judo simultaneously. He discovered he preferred the kicking and punching of taekwondo and left judo to devote his time to taekwondo training. He excelled quickly and was promoted directly to blue belt after 3 years. As a red belt, he won his first national championship and remained the National Champion of Mali from 1986 to 1993. During this time, he received his 1st and 2nd Degree Black Belts from Master Moussa Diarra. In 1993, he went to New York to singly represent his country in the World Taekwondo Championships at Madison Square Garden where he reached the quarterfinals. After the World Championships, Master Fall decided to move to New York. Shortly after he arrived, he found West Side Taekwondo and began training with Masters Sung Chul and Jung Chul Whang. They soon asked him to teach classes and he worked with them for eight years, spending seven of those as Head Instructor. He also received his 3rd and 4th Degree Black Belts and continued competing. He left West Side Taekwondo in December of 2001 to open his own school, Harlem Tae Kwon Do, in January of 2002. Most recently, he received his 5th Degree from Grandmaster Dong Keun Park.

Program Description:

One World Taekwondo supports youth in the Harlem community through giving them a chance to change their lives by understanding the discipline and power that come from practicing a martial art. We believe that participation in martial arts has a substantive, positive effect on the lives of young people. Our scholarship program gives economically disadvantaged youth access to the benefits of studying taekwondo at our school, Harlem Tae Kwon Do. They learn discipline, focus, self-confidence, and respect for themselves and others. Students must maintain good academic standing in order to remain eligible.

Scholarship opportunities are also available to adults in the form of full or partial tuition assistance or through our work/study program. Applicants must demonstrate a willingness to give back to the community.

Scholarship eligibility is based on, but not limited to, a lack of financial means, a need to augment after school activities, the recommendation of a health professional, or a motivation to learn martial arts. Acceptance of candidates for scholarships is the sole discretion of the board of directors. Documentation reviewed includes the signed Confidential Application, signed Agreement, signed liability waiver, signed Dojang Rules & Etiquette, the Trial Month Review, and Free School lunch qualification letter, previous years tax return, pay stubs or any other proof of income as the Board deems acceptable. Additional materials for children (K-12) include a supporting letter and the child's most recent report card. Applications are reviewed at the next upcoming board meeting or via email if the next meeting is more than 1 month away.

Scholarships are for 1 year from the date of approval and applicants may re-certify each year to continue their training. The scholarship covers Tuition for 12 months ($1200), basic sparring equipment ($20), uniform ($40) and annual testing fees (4/year-$180). The applicant's responsibility is a $25 application fee to cover administrative costs.

The first month of the scholarship period is a trial month which allows the applicant a chance to demonstrate their seriousness and commitment to the program and provides the board with the required Trial Month Review.

Continued involvement in the program is based upon the following criteria including but not limited to: Academic Criteria (K-12 grade) - maintenance of prior grades at school, attendance at school satisfactory within school requirements, behavior and attitude satisfactory within school guidelines; Dojang Criteria - attendance in at least three classes per week, satisfactory attitude and performance in class, observance of dojang rules; demonstrate a willingness to give back.

Program Long-Term Success:

The program is designed to give youth a chance to change his or her life by understanding the discipline and power that comes from practicing a martial art. We strive to instill values that will carry with them through the entire course of their life - discipline to achieve goals, respect for self and others, self confidence to handle life’s pressures, gitness for physical well-being, self defense for personal protection, focus and concentration for everyday life. We believe that with these values, all youth can become successful adults and make a positive change in the world around them.

Program Short-Term Success:

After one week in the program, students become more focused and able to follow directions quickly. After two weeks, there is an improvement in school performance and parents say their children listen better. After one month, grades improve and teachers compliment the focus and concentration the student exhibits in class and in homework.

Program Success Monitored by:
We survey parents of new students after their child has been in the program for one month, 6 months, and one year. We hope to expand the survey to include the child's school teachers.
Program Success Examples:

Survey results are forthcoming.
