Valerie Traore

Profile:

Valerie came from City Harvest in New York City where she served as Director of Agency Relations. Her background is strong in the mission of hunger relief and with more than 20 years experience in nonprofit management. Valerie came to the Food Bank of South Jersey (FBSJ) in March, 2006 and she brings a wealth of knowledge to the southern New Jersey nonprofit community. In her previous position as Director of Agency Relations for City Harvest, Valerie had direct responsibility for developing and maintaining a network of more than 800 charitable feeding programs, throughout New York City. Additionally she created several successful programs including the phenomenal Mobile Market, which increased the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in economically disadvantaged communities. Prior to City Harvest, Valerie worked as a regional field services manager for America?s Second Harvest®, the nation?s food bank networkTM, based in Chicago, Illinois. In this role, Valerie traveled extensively throughout the country advising food banks and food rescue organizations in areas of strategic development, organizational management, board relations, financial management, and facilities management. Valerie?s other management positions were at several nonprofit organizations in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Management from Coppin State University and is currently a graduate student at Rutgers University studying for an MBA in Strategic Management. Valerie resides in Sicklerville, New Jersey with her husband and son.

Program Description:

CURRENT PROGRAMS Direct Delivery program ensures that donated food reaches hungry families and individuals living in rural areas of southern New Jersey. We provide weekly deliveries to 46 charitable feeding organizations with food they would not otherwise be able to distribute to their clients. Kids Cafe program provides at-risk children with a safe place to receive hot meals, nutrition education and enriching academic and recreational activities. In partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Gloucester County, it has expanded to three sites and benefits 160 children. Food Acquisition Project ensures that the FBSJ has greater access to the millions of pounds of surplus food that is thrown away each year. Because so much of the wasted food in our country is made up of fresh, healthy items like fresh fruits and vegetables, this initiative also helps improve the quality of food we distribute. Healthy, perishable items are especially critical for sustaining programs that feed vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly. Fruit Basket project ensures that every after school or summer camp program has a consistent supply of fresh fruits so that children will have a healthy alternative for snack food. Along with the supply of fruit we will offer age appropriate mini nutrition classes to help children learn the benefits of healthy eating. FUTURE PROGRAMS Agency Capacity Expansion program is designed to strengthen the fragile network of charitable feeding programs to distribute more food safely and efficiently in under served communities. Utilizing internal resources and industry experts we provide training in food safety, inventory control, volunteer management, and fundraising and food acquisition methods. Operation Frontline is a national program administered locally is a nutrition education program that fights childhood hunger by teaching families how to make healthy and budget-wise food choices. With six different courses that target adults, teens and children, Operation Frontline takes a cooking-centered approach to nutrition education. Chefs and nutritionists volunteer to teach classes that feature hands-on meal preparation, basic nutrition, food safety, menu planning, food budgeting and healthy snacking. We are scheduled to launch this program in Fall 2007.

Program Description:

The program is designed to help low-income seniors who often struggle with paying for food, medication and housing. Seniors must be 60 yrs or older and demonstrate proof of income and residency. Participants receive a 10-day meal box intended to supplement their monthly groceries.

The Food Bank of South Jersey (FBSJ) is committed to providing an immediate solution to the urgent problem of hunger.  All of our programs are designed to accomplish three important goals on a daily basis: • Provide safe and nutritious food to those in need • Educate the public  on how to eat nutritiously via cooking demonstrations and hands-on cooking courses • Help individuals identify sustainable ways to improve their lives by connecting them to social, educational and financial resources For every $1 FBSJ receives, .90 is applied to the program and services that help more than 170,000 children, seniors and working families needing food assistance and nutrition education. Since our inception in 1985, we have distributed more than 150 million pounds of food to those at risk of hunger and malnutrition throughout Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties.   If you believe that no one should go hungry, we encourage you to help us fulfill our mission.
