Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
Created conservation lesson plans for use by local schools and youth groups. Local farmers have partnered with ALT to conserve the agricultural heritage and industry of the island. Established free walking tours, trolley tours, and speaking events to teach about local ecology and conservation efforts. 2012:ALT, with generous and visionary support from the Bilden family, completes its project of having the remaining overhead utility poles and lines removed along the critical 4-mile scenic stretch of Ocean Drive, one of the United States’ premier scenic and historic roadways.2012:ALT completed the Aquidneck Island’s Conserved Lands Mapping Project, which updated ALT’s 2004 study, and this demonstrated that 20.6% of the Island is now conserved.2012:ALT completes the final 5+/- miles phase of its Sakonnet Greenway Trail, making the trail 10+/- miles in total length, the Island’s largest, free public nature trail. The proposed 70 +/- acre St. Mary’s Church conservation area falls within the St. Mary’s Pond Watershed, directly abutting the St. Mary’s Pond Reservoir, and acts as a natural buffer protecting this important island water reservoir from harmful runoff. The woods, fields and wetlands of the land provide diverse wildlife habitats.

General Public/Unspecified
Program Description:
The need for land conservation on Aquidneck Island has never been greater. With the pace of development Aquidneck Island is experiencing, the next five years are crucial to the conservation of the Island's remaining open space. Within 25 years, all of Aquidneck Island's land that can be built on will likely either be developed or be protected open space. ALT undertakes multiple initiatives to meet this urgent need.
Land Conservation
The AILT protects land through purchases and gifts of land and development rights. We partner with private landowners, government entities and other organizations to increase our resources and achieve mutual conservation goals.
Sakonnet Greenway Trail
The ALT has created a green corridor known as the Sakonnet Greenway, extending from extending from the Glen Farm in Portsmouth and ultimately to the Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown and beyond. Together with our community partners we are connecting farms, recreational open space and natural habitat with a trail that will enable the public to hike, walk their dogs (on leashes), and possibly ride horses through the Greenway.
Aquidneck Island Partnership and Land Conservation Strategy
ALT is a core member of the Aquidneck Island Partnership - a collaborative effort of 16 local organizations working to improve the quality of life on Aquidneck Island. A major initiative of the Partnership is the ALT - initiated Land Conservation Strategy. Focused on farming, linked open space, water resource protection and habitat preservation, this strategy is an evolving framework for conservation across the Island.
