Profile:
Ellen Spoehr, AFE's Executive Director has demonstrated a total of 25 years of experience in the nonprofit and human service sector serving diverse populations of youth and adults with a strong emphasis on organizational leadership, staff and volunteer supervision, strategic planning, office and financial management, fund development, communications, program planning and evaluation, database management and public relations.
Leadership Statement:

Transport to crucial medical care is an important community need not addressed by any other government agency, private for-profit business, or medical organization located in southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Delaware. It is not covered under most health insurance policies or Medicare.

Ongoing need for public benefit flying increases daily because of advances in medicine. Medical practitioners diagnose and treat increasing numbers of adults and children with health conditions requiring highly technical and increasingly specialized care. AFE’s goal is to get people to the treatment they need by arranging transportation through a network of volunteer pilots. A fee is never charged for the flight and the volunteer pilot donates all of the costs of the flight. This in-kind donation exceeds $350,000 annually and is not included expense analysis pie-chart reflected here. It is important to note that according to our 2011 Tax Form 990, with donated pilot services included, program expenses were 80.07% and administrative expenses were 11.39%.

Program Description:

Each year, AFE flies between 300-400 medical missions for people who need to access treatment far from home. Due to the need to collaborate in order to fulfill our mission, AFE is an active member of the AirCare Alliance which includes more than 50 patient transport organizations throughout the country.

Most AFE patients require air transportation numerous times over several years for follow-up and treatment of their conditions. In 2012, AFE on average, flew a patient between 4 and 6 times for their care. Infants, children and youth constitute one-half of the patients we transport and providing transportation of family members is also a critical component of our service. In the past year, AFE has flown patients to well-known medical facilities including:

Boston Children’s Hospital

Cancer Treatment Centers of America

Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania

Dana Farber Cancer Institute

DuPont Hospital for Children

Cleveland Clinic

Johns Hopkins Medical Center

Mayo Clinic

Memorial Sloan Kettering

National Institute of Health

Shriners Hospital

University of Pennsylvania Hospital

University of Pittsburg Medical Center

Wills Eye Institute
