Mr. Christopher A Brown

Profile:

Christopher A. Brown is president of National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI). Chris has been with NFI since 2000, having previously served as executive vice president. Chris oversees NFI's strategy and business model development and implementation, operations, and fundraising. He is responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of NFI’s products, programs, training, and services. Chris has played a critical role in shaping NFI’s focus as the leading provider of fatherhood skill-building resources in the country and the leading trainer of practitioners seeking to offer fatherhood programs in their communities. In his long tenure with NFI, he has been the organization’s foremost developer of its world-class fatherhood programs. Brown has authored or co-authored flagship NFI programs such as 24/7 Dad® and InsideOut Dad®, its more recent, innovative programs such as Understanding Dad™, and many workshops, brochures, pocket guides, and other skill-building materials. An applied anthropologist and author of several journal articles and book chapters on issues related to child health and well-being, he has studied masculinity cross culturally, especially as it applies to fatherhood and men's health and well-being. He has appeared as a fatherhood expert in media outlets, including the L.A. Times, New York Times, Nick Jr. Magazine, and CNN. He served as a social marketing specialist and health communications consultant with the Texas Department of State Health Services before joining NFI. He received his bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of North Texas and his master's degree in Applied Anthropology from the University of South Florida. Chris lives in the Austin,Texas area with his wife and two daughters, ages 18 and 15.

Leadership Statement:

The most disturbing social trend of our times is the dramatic increase in fatherlessness in the United States. In 1960, less than 8 million children were living in families where the father was absent. Today the number of children living in father-absent homes stands at over 24 million. That means that tonight, one out of every three children in America will go to sleep in a home in which their father does not live. Children who grow up in father-absent homes are significantly more likely to do poorly on almost every measure of child well-being. For example: -- Almost 75 percent of American children who grow up in single-parent homes will experience poverty before they turn 11-years-old, compared to only 20 percent for families where there are two parents. -- Violent criminals are overwhelmingly males who grew up without fathers, including 72 percent of adolescent murderers and 70 percent of long-term prison inmates. -- Children living in father-absent homes are also more likely to be suspended from school, or to drop out; be treated for an emotional or behavioral problem; commit suicide as adolescents; and be victims of child abuse or neglect. National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI), supported by its members, is working to change this. We serve as a catalyst for engaging America in a public and forthright discussion about the necessity of reversing these trends. NFI equips fathers and father-serving organizations with high-quality fatherhood skill-building materials and training, encourages and supports family and father-friendly policies, and develops national public education campaigns to highlight the importance of fathers in the lives of their children. I invite you to support NFI. Ensuring that more children grow up with involved and committed fathers is the best way to ensure that every child has what should be their birthright: a happy and secure childhood. Christopher A. Brown, President, National Fatherhood Initiative

Board Leadership Practices (GuideStar Exchange,
The GuideStar Exchange allows nonprofits to regularly update key information directly to GuideStar. It provides richer and broader information about their programs, impact, finances, people and more.
January 2014)
?

GuideStar worked with BoardSource, the national leader in nonprofit board leadership and governance, to create this section, which enables organizations and donors to transparently share information about essential board leadership practices.

Board Orientation & Education ?
Why does this matter? Without clarity around their responsibilities and expectations, board members are not positioned to succeed. They may find themselves challenged to fulfill their governance responsibilities or frustrated by the expectations that the organization has set for them. BoardSource recommends that every new board member participate in a formal orientation process, and that all board members sign a pledge or agreement committing to their board service and to all of the responsibilities and expectations that come with service. Ideally, board members also should participate in a formal governance training program prior to serving on a board.

Does the board conduct a formal orientation for new board members and require all board members to sign a written agreement regarding their roles, responsibilities, and expectations?
Response Not Provided
CEO Oversight ?
Why does this matter? Oversight and management of the chief executive is one of the board’s most important legal responsibilities. The CEO or executive director is the board's single employee, and - just like any other employer/employee relationship - regular and written assessment is critical to ensuring that the chief executive and board are communicating openly about goals and performance. BoardSource recommends that boards conduct formal, written reviews of their chief executives on an annual basis, which should include an in-person discussion with the chief executive and distribution of the written evaluation to the full board.

Has the board conducted a formal, written assessment of the chief executive within the past year?
Response Not Provided
Ethics & Transparency ?
Why does this matter? A commitment to handling conflicts of interests is essential to creating an organizational culture of transparency. Boards should create and follow a policy for identifying and handling conflicts of interest, whether real or perceived. BoardSource recommends that organizations review the conflict-of-interest statement and require signed disclosures from all board members and senior staff on an annual basis.

Have the board and senior staff reviewed the conflict-of-interest policy and completed and signed disclosure statements within the past year?
Response Not Provided
Board Composition ?
Why does this matter? The best boards are composed of individuals who bring a variety of skills, perspectives, backgrounds, and resources to tackle the complex and strategic challenges confronting their organizations. BoardSource recommends that boards commit to diversity and inclusion by establishing written policies and practices, which include strategic and intentional recruitment of diverse board members, continual commitment to inclusivity, and equal access to board leadership opportunities.

Does the board ensure an inclusive board member recruitment process that results in diversity of thought and leadership?
Response Not Provided
Board Performance ?
Why does this matter? Boards need to regularly assess their own performance. Doing so ensures that they are being intentional about how they govern their organization, which is a critical component of effective board leadership. BoardSource recommends that a board conduct a self-assessment of its performance a minimum of once every three years to ensure that it is staying on track with its roles and responsibilities.

Has the board conducted a formal, written self-assessment of its performance within the past three years?

Program Description:

24/7 Dad® is the most comprehensive fatherhood program available with innovative tools, strategies, and exercises for fathers of all races, religions, cultures, and backgrounds! Developed by fathering and parenting experts, it focuses on the characteristics men need to be good fathers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Second Edition Updates.

Program Long-Term Success:

An independent third-party evaluation conducted by the Hyra Consulting found statistically significant changes in fathering attitudes and knowledge among fathers served by the Puerto Rican Family Institute (PRFI) who participated in the 24/7 Dad® program. This study represents the most comprehensive evaluation of the program to date as it involved measuring the impact of the program on 785 participants. Of particular note is that the majority of the participants were Hispanic, a group underrepresented in other evaluations of the program. The study found significant changes across even more attitudes and knowledge variables than previous studies of the program, thus underscoring the effectiveness of the program generally and across racial and ethnic groups.

Program Description:

Overview Over the years, National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) has been asked, "What do you have for Mothers?" In response, we surveyed our customers and partners regarding the concept of a fatherhood organization creating resource for mothers. With overwhelming support for creating these resources, we proceeded to create a program designed specifically for mothers, to help them improve the relationships they have with fathers, for the benefit of their children. Data shows that one in three children in the U.S. grows up in a home without his or her biological father, and the lack of father involvement increases the risk that children will suffer from a range of social, emotional, and physical ills. Unfortunately, many times it's the mothers' gatekeeping behavior that can prevent or reduce fathers' access to their children - when fathers' involvement in their children's lives would actually benefit their children. In addition, mothers can lack the self-awareness and communications skills they need to improve their relationships with the fathers of their children. What's Included Understanding Dad™ includes 8 two-hour sessions that can be implemented in a group setting, or a one-on-one home based program. Each Complete Program Kit includes: 1 Understanding Dad™ Facilitator's Manual 10 Mother's Handbooks for use during the program and that the moms can keep CD-ROM with an evaluation tool, marketing resources, video content for some sessions, and more! DVD with video content for some sessions Topics Understanding Dad™ focuses on the goal of accomplishing communication and awareness objectives that are vital to improving the relationships between mothers and fathers. Program Long-Term Success:

Program Short-Term Success:

A pilot program evaluation conducted by Jay Fagan, Ph.D., Professor and Mollie Cherson, M.A., Research Assistant, Temple University, School of Social Work evaluated the effects of mothers’ participation in an eight week intervention program on mothers’ relationship awareness, knowledge of healthy coparenting relationships, and relationship self-efficacy. Thirty-four mothers were recruited from four sites to participate in a study that used a pretest/post-test one-group design. Over the course of this eight week program, mothers demonstrated moderate to large gains in each of the outcome measures, after controlling for mothers’ educational level. Moreover, there was one significant within-subjects interaction effect for time & location. That is, mothers made significantly greater gains in pro-relationship knowledge in one of the intervention sites. Implications for future research are discussed.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Additional Information
A Charting Impact Report consists of an organization’s responses to the five questions. Helping validate this self-reported data are three reviews. Once an organization has used the online interface to complete its report, its responses will produce a document with a unique URL that will be shared on this website, on your GuideStar profile, on the reports of charities participating in BBB Wise Giving Alliance evaluations, and – in the future – with other websites and information sources about nonprofits. We encourage organizations to use this URL to share their report on their own website and through their own media channels. Participants will receive guidance about promoting their Charting Impact Report, along with other benefits, once they publish their report.

When you donate to our work, you’re investing in children, families, and communities. By connecting fathers to their children, heart to heart, we provide our children – and our nation – with a much-needed resource: involved, responsible, and committed fathers.
