Mission Statement
To provide education and support for the practice of grateful living as a global ethic, based on the teachings of Br. David Steindl-Rast and others. We offer free resources through our online hub, Gratefulness.org, as well as workshops, retreats, and local groups that teach people to cultivate gratefulness. We aim to set up a spiral of learning, practice, and sharing that opens out into real-life action and service to society. Our mission is to build up and expand our interactive website as the focus for a global community of people whose spiritual practice is grateful living; to provide a unifying ethic that demonstrates we are not separate one from another, in an age of globalization that undermines our ethics and sense of worldwide community; to offer workshops and retreats that increase people's awareness of gratefulness as a tool for personal healing and compassion towards others, a lifelong practice; to partner with other organizations and institutions who want to explore how gratefulness can transform and energize their own work and mission; to support local groups studying the practice of grateful living; to demonstrate the interconnectedness between gratefulness and the healthy flow of resources in a spirit of sufficiency; and to promote public awareness of gratefulness as a power for change in areas such as ecology, religious tolerance, and intergenerational respect.

Leadership Statement:
It takes a community to change the world. Think of the Underground Railroad that brought slaves to freedom in the certainty that helping people a few at time eventually builds a groundswell. Think of Satyagraha, a movement that not only changed India’s history in Gandhi’s day but also influenced nonviolent campaigns in many other countries. Think of the inspiring news that Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh and the Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, reminding us of micro-credit lending schemes around the world that enable the poor to start and sustain businesses. And these examples only skim the surface of recent history! When we look at individual lives changed by our work at A Network for Grateful Living (ANG*L) – people facing grief with fresh equanimity, appreciating anew the Earth’s gifts, wanting to “pay it forward” and pave the way to a clear ethic of compassion – we see that these changes do not take place in isolation. Thousands of people come to Gratefulness.org each day to understand personally what it means to live in great fullness. But by supporting each other on this journey and sharing ideas, our strength goes far beyond what individuals alone can achieve. Our staff meets this surge of interest with a steady stream of new developments, many of which you will find on this year’s “accomplishments” insert. But the achievement of which we feel most proud does not lend itself to a list. It is an orientation within the human heart towards a more grateful world. When enough of us come together and face the same direction, giving our lives in response to all that has been freely given to us, we quite naturally reorient those around us. As the gospel song proclaims: “We have another world in view.” That world is already breaking into the here and now through the ANG*L community’s uncommonly common efforts.Blessings,Patricia Carlson, Executive DirectorA Network for Grateful Living

Program Description:
Our primary tool for communication is www.gratefulness.org, an interactive website. Through attracting, encouraging, and challenging people who visit the site, we are able to build a network for grateful living that provides online support for offline action. In the seven years of our existence, A Network for Grateful Living (ANGeL) has attracted more than 20,000 subscribers to our email list, with members in all 50 states of the United States and in more than 240 countries worldwide. An average of 10,000 people a day visit our website.
Program Long-Term Success:
We created an online, interactive Labyrinth Pilgrimage which allows visitors to trace a path through quotes from an array of religious traditions and associated photos of universal appeal. This experience is carefully scripted to bring people fresh peace and perspective on problems facing them. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive: ?What an excellent presentation you?ve made of the labyrinth! I?ve visited other labyrinth sites, but none as imaginative and satisfying as yours. Please keep up the good work you are doing with this site!?
