Leadership Statement:

Over 50 years ago American Whitewater was established as one of our nation’s first river conservation organizations. Our founders had the following objectives in mind when they saw an opportunity to unite paddling clubs across the country for a common purpose of preserving the integrity of our nation’s whitewater rivers:
•           Encourage the exploration, enjoyment, and preservation of American recreational waterways for human powered craft;

•           Protect the wilderness character of waterways through conservation of water, forests, parks, wildlife, and related resources;

• Promote safety and proficiency in all aspects of white-water activities

• Promote appreciation for the recreational value of wilderness cruising and of white-water sports.

Today our work continues and we occupy a unique role in the national river conservation movement connecting those who enjoy recreational opportunities with river conservation and stewardship goals.

On each project we work on, we seek land conservation, public river access, stream flow information, and flow releases that benefit the aquatic ecosystem as well as recreation. We have a proven track record of success with each of these goals. These enhancements create a triple bottom line: they result in healthier rivers, they provide local communities a sustainable economic base and they provide opportunities for healthy nature-based recreation.

It will serve as the primary repository for our institutional knowledge, and the primary resource for our ever growing volunteer network. We hope too that these toolks will be used by agencies, electric utilities, the press, partner organizations, and other recreationists. The Toolkit contains detailed information and advice on river access, hydropower licensing, public land management, environmental advocacy, legislation, and river safety as well as numerous case studies and links to regulatory information.
