Program Description:

As the oldest and largest no-kill shelter in Arizona, we do everything possible to save a life. Every animal that comes into our care is evaluated and treated by our full-time veterinary staff, including vaccinations, microchips, sterilization, and a complete exam in preparation for adoption. Our mobile vet clinic offers low-cost vaccines and microchips to the public at various locations across the Valley and low-cost spay/neuter services to other rescue groups that cannot afford to have full-time veterinary staff.

More than 500 volunteers each year provide exercise, socialization and care for adoptable dogs and cats, both on-site and at off-site events. Each year we hold a Volunteer Appreciate Dinner where we give awards for the best volunteer in many categories, including our Best Teen Volunteer.

Successful matchmaking starts with finding a life-long companion that fits your lifestyle. Whether you are looking for a weekend hiking buddy or a couch potato, our trained adoption counselors will help you find the pet that will be the perfect match for your family.

Home to the largest humane education program in Arizona, we offer programs for ages 3 to adult, including: Camp Ruffin' It, Vet Camp, Teen Tracks, Home School Thursdays, Girl Scout Workshops, school visits, birthday parties and much more. Children learn how to humanely treat animals and interact with some of our Animal Ambassadors, such as Guapo the Green Iguana, Romeo the Ferret and Oliver, the Cockatoo.

People come from all over to AAWL/SPCA to teach their dogs new tricks! We offer classes such as basic obedience, therapy dog prep course, tricks, agility, flyball and more. Our goal with this program is to ensure the dogs adopted and rescued stay in their forever homes and to provide any help with animal behavior that is needed - including a free help desk.

Program Long-Term Success:

We have increased adoptions by 60% over the past two years by rescuing and treating more animals than ever before. Our low-cost vaccine and microchip clinics have served hundreds of people since it began in 2010 and our low-cost spay/neuter services have saved money for other rescue groups that can't afford regular vet services.
