Mission Statement

Glasswing recognizes that in Latin America there are large reserves of latent resources (human and material) in communities and the private sector which, if catalyzed, could bring about sustainable change via committed social investment. To make this model a reality, we support volunteerism, education, health and community development projects that involve people from all sectors of society to encourage awareness and social integration and to reduce fatalism in the region. Glasswing's unique model utilizes a small team of technical experts in the U.S., with very efficient operating expenses, to support regional programs where local experts identify needs, set objectives and develop initiatives that encourage broader societal participation and investment in community. This way, funding we receive is primarily for regionally implemented projects, not US operations, building the capacity of those in the region and ensuring that projects receive maximum resources and technical support as needed.

Program Description:

Glasswing International, USA partners with Glasswing International in El Salvador to implement innovative volunteer programs. Glasswing is the leading coordinator of volunteering and corporate community engagement in El Salvador and has developed a strong portfolio of projects in education, health and community building. They have established the first volunteer center in El Salvador. Glasswing's volunteer projects involve people from all sectors of society - from corporations and businesses that supply materials and volunteers, to professional skilled-volunteers, to community members from areas where projects are being implemented. Glasswing International, USA, helps to support Glasswing's volunteer center, its education and skill-based volunteer programs, and its corporate volunteering projects. Through Glasswing's "Volunteers in Education program", more than 3,000 students, from public schools in all regions of El Salvador, are being reached. The 10 month old program has already recruited over 70 deeply-committed, professional volunteers who invest their time to improve the quality of education in the Salvadorian public school system. They teach classes in English, computers, arts, reading, and sports, in some of the poorest and most violent, gang ridden neighborhoods in El Salvador. In addition, Glasswing has enlisted more than 250 skill-based volunteers from various professional sectors to participate in community rebuilding and revitalization projects. Carpenters, electricians, engineers, plumbers, construction workers, and architects have volunteered their time and skills to develop plans for building and space reconstruction and to participate in community projects. Professionals such as accountants, IT professionals, health care workers and administrators also work with Glasswing and are placed with community groups, hospitals, and schools that are need of, and unable to afford, professional assistance (e.g. psychologists help local non-profits with a community based mental health program). By supporting programs that harness volunteer time, skills, goods and services, to make direct and relatively low-cost impacts on the most needy students and communities, Glasswing International, USA strives to support community-based change and to break the cycle of poverty and increase social cohesion. Following our model for sustainability, we rely on local experts, such as those in Glasswing, to identify needs, set objectives and develop initiatives that make sense and work for the region.
