Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
Access to sufficient, affordable, and healthy foods is one of the key social justice issues of our time. Demanding access, however, first requires awareness of the central role of food. Food is a tangible and relevant tool by which we can raise awareness in adults and children about the interrelatedness of food in health culture, politics, the economy, the environment, and language.

Food is connected to every part of human life.

An individual who is intellectually and emotionally engaged with their food and their world has greater opportunity to reach his or her fullest potential.

Every individual has the potential to be drivers of positive social change.

Societal issues can be creatively resolved through strong and active communities.

Get children hooked and the whole family is hooked.

Leadership

Term:
Since
Oct
2009
Profile:
With a background in international, children’s, and international
education, Dr. Chiu has developed and implemented educational programs
for teenagers to adults. She also has a background in non-formal
education and in healthy eating education. She holds an Ed.D. from
Teachers College, Columbia University, a M.A. in international diplomacy
from the Fletcher School, and a A.B. from Dartmouth College.
Leadership Statement:
In this fight against a food system that does not work for our health and welfare, we sometimes forget that many
children have limited or no access to even the most well-intentioned program.
We also have to engage the voices of everyone - not just a few. To drive real and lasting impact, we need to include the perspectives of all who live in our global community, and to go to the child and make learning fun and relevant. After all, children’s
natural curiosities make them the most powerful and underrated change agents.

Education
- Population Served:
-
Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Program Description:

Zomppa raises food awareness by bringing food to life. We develop
healthy food attitudes and awareness by relating global food issues to
children’s lives through rotating exhibits that highlight different
foods and cultures. The Zomppabus will bring the program directly to partner schools,
community-based organizations, and other family-friendly venues. In addition to the physical "food atlas on wheels," Zomppabus is also an online classroom with videos for children, parents, and educators, as well as a platform for children to share their food victories and stories.

The Zomppabus is an innovative mobile curriculum that targets children in pre-K to 2nd grades. It integrates critical issues through interdisciplinary and experiential learning. It offers a cost- effective way to build a pipeline of empowered youth to become agents for change, allowing cash-strapped schools and organizations, parents and educators to raise greater awareness and interest in 1) greater interest in food/nutrition; 2) greater interest in other countries/cultures; and 3) healthier eating behaviors and knowledge of where food comes from.
Its innovation for social change is based on three simple premises: go to the child; make learning fun and relevant; get children hooked and the whole family is hooked. Each unit “transports” the children to a different country or culture, where they learn about food in an interdisciplinary manner: Culture & Language, Science & Environment, Math & Economy, and Health & Nutrition.

- Population Served:

Adults
Program Description:

Zomppa seeks to influence and impact the dialogue and debate surrounding food’s relevance in our lives, inviting those who have been traditionally overlooked in these discussions to the table and empowering those who have been historically marginalized with the healthier eating tools and appreciation for food’s importance.

Zomppa's online community cafe is made public to all of readers upon a free registration. Members can then participate in the forum by initiating, debating and engaging in any and all topics related to food, food security, health, nutrition, politics, economics on the national and or international landscape.

The purpose of the online community cafe is to an online community of active and engaged supporters who can then create the groundswell for local, national, and global social impact. It is our hope that Zommppa’s online ‘journal’ can bring a diverse and eclectic group of organizations, people and agencies together to dissect and discuss pressing issues of our time and promote initiatives that are aligned with Zomppa’s own food philosophy and goals.
