Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
In our mission to reduce serious dog attacks, many of which are carried out by pit bulls, DogsBite.org continues to gather dog bite statistical data and produce reports that are freely available to the public. In April 2011, data from DogsBite.org was cited in a peer-reviewed medical journal study, "Mortality, Mauling, and Maiming by Vicious Dogs," published by the Annals of Surgery. In October of 2011, DogsBite.org wrote an amicus brief in a landmark Maryland lawsuit involving a young boy that was nearly killed by a tenant's pit bull. The Court of Appeals of Maryland issued a ruling in favor of the victim in April 2012 and transformed state law concerning attacks involving pit bulls. The Court of Appeals imposed, "strict liability in respect to attacks on humans by pit bull dogs and cross-bred pit bull dogs." Accordingly, 1.) It is no longer necessary for victims to prove that a pit bull is dangerous and 2.) Landlords can be held liable if their tenant's pit bull attacks. The Court's ruling is essential for victims of violent pit bull maulings who are usually greatly burdened by medical costs following a damaging attack and the dog's owner lacks little or no means to provide compensation. The impact of DogsBite.org in 2011 is clear: We are helping to transform laws to ensure that victims of serious dog maulings have a remedy.

Program Description:
Dog bite statistical data gathering is the cornerstone of DogsBite.org and has resulted in several important studies issued by DogsBite.org including: U.S. Dog Bite Fatalities January 2006 to December 2008 (April 2009) and U.S. Pit Bull Attacks in 85-Day Period (October 2008). As of March 2013, the 3-year dog bite fatality study has been accessed over 61,000 times since its release and is still frequently quoted by the media. In April 2011, statistics from the 85-day data collection period were cited in a peer-reviewed medical journal study, "Mortality, Mauling, and Maiming by Vicious Dogs," published by the Annals of Surgery. Each year, starting from 2005, DogsBite.org collects U.S. fatal dog bite data. These annual reports are issued in January of the following year and are widely read by media members, attorneys, medical professionals and researchers. The last "breed-specific" dog bite fatality report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was in the year 2000. Our annual reports fill this absence of vital information for the public. Lastly, in addition to our annual reports, DogsBite.org also supplies cumulative data at the end of each year. For instance, a chart depicting fatal dog attacks by breed from year 2005 forward. This chart was included in our October 2011 amicus brief filing in a landmark Maryland appeals case on behalf of a young boy nearly killed by a pit bull. The chart provided the Court of Appeals with relevant and "recent" data about deaths by dog breed, which may have helped the Court reach its favorable decision for this victim and all new victims of pit bull attacks in the State of Maryland.
