Mission Statement
<p>The C&O Canal Trust is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to work in partnership with the National Park Service to protect, restore, and promote the C&O Canal National Historical Park. The Trust seeks to ensure that the park's natural, historical, and recreational potential is fully realized. The C&O Canal Trust believes that bold thinking and fresh ideas are needed if the canal is going to meet the challenges of the 21st century. </p>

<p><strong>Canal Quarters</strong>: Launched the Canal Quarters Interpretive Program by furnishing and making available 3 historic lockhouses for guests to stay in overnight and experience first-hand what it may have been like to live along the canal. <strong>Volunteerism</strong>: Mobilized over 2,000 volunteers during the first 3 years of our annual Canal Pride Days to complete hundreds of backlogged maintenance projects prior to the visitor season in some of the most visited locations in the park. <strong>Education and Interpretation</strong>: Developed 13 audio podcasts to provide interpretive content to Park visitors to encourage walking on the towpath as part of a healthy lifestyle; Helped bring nearly 7,000 schoolchildren and 21,000 people in total to Williamsport to experience the interactive “Building America’s Canals” traveling exhibit. <strong>Fundraising</strong>: Provided $100,000 to the Park to speed up repair of the breach in the canal between Great Falls and Angler’s Inn, the most visited section of the entire 184.5-mile long park; Established memorial funds to support the Billy Goat Stewards volunteer corps, Eagle Scout projects in the park, and park bench adoption along the towpath. <strong>Economic Development</strong>: Helped launch a marketing alliance to promote the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail (of which the C&O Canal NHP is a major component), including the development of a website, familiarization tours for travel writers, and travel itineraries; Participated in the creation of the Canal Towns program in gateway communities along the park to stimulate park-related economic development. <strong>Advocacy</strong>: Led and actively supported advocacy efforts for the Park for Centennial funding, ARRA funding, Big Slackwater, the Angler’s breach, Western Maryland Rail-Trail, and the Catoctin Aqueduct. <strong>Other</strong>: Digitally preserved nearly 5,000 historic photographs in the park’s collection.<u></u></p>

Matthew is the founding president of the C&O Canal Trust and the immediate past-president of Potomac Conservancy, a regional conservation organization. Matthew's tenure at the Conservancy (1998-2006) was marked by tremendous growth in organizational resources, capacity, and effectiveness. Matthew used to serve on the Board of Directors of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, was a co-founder and past-chairman of Potomac Riverkeeper, and holds Master's degrees in environment/land use planning and United States history.
