Program Description:

At the invitation of eye surgeons in developing countries, and with the approval of local health and civic authorities, SEE International recruits, organizes and deploys numerous small surgical teams worldwide SEE International is the link that connects affiliate ophthalmologists to host clinic sites that are in desperate need of help alleviating the overwhelming numbers of people living in darkness.  SEE International organizes the clinics and provides most of the equipment and supplies that are needed.  Affiliate ophthalmologists donate their time and pay for all their own travel expenses.  During each clinic (approximately five days long) 50-200 people are given the gift of sight.  In order to accomplish this amazing feat and at such a low cost (approximately $108 per surgery),  SEE International has established an effective network that includes such companies as Johnson & Johnson, Bausch & Lomb and Alcon who donate most of the supplies that are used for the clinics.

Program Long-Term Success:

2013 marks SEE International's 39th anniversary of providing sight-restoring surgery to children and adults around the world. SEE continues to identify sites for expedition clinics and provides administrative and logistics support for the volunteer ophthalmologists who donate their time and professional services. SEE procures and ships equipment, supplies and medications required for the expedition clinics.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Additional Information
A Charting Impact Report consists of an organization’s responses to the five questions. Helping validate this self-reported data are three reviews. Once an organization has used the online interface to complete its report, its responses will produce a document with a unique URL that will be shared on this website, on your GuideStar profile, on the reports of charities participating in BBB Wise Giving Alliance evaluations, and – in the future – with other websites and information sources about nonprofits. We encourage organizations to use this URL to share their report on their own website and through their own media channels. Participants will receive guidance about promoting their Charting Impact Report, along with other benefits, once they publish their report.

In 2012 alone, SEE International performed 10,173 surgeries in 36 countries around the world. Over the course of 39 years SEE has screened approximately 3.2 million individuals, and completed over 400,000 surgeries in 75 different countries. Moreover, in 2012 the Santa Barbara Vision Care Program provided services for 1,247 low-income and uninsured patients in Santa Barbara County.
