Mission Statement

Virginia's natural and historic landscapes are unparalleled--they range from the once pristine waters of the Chesapeake Bay to the beautiful scenic viewsheds of the Blue Ridge Mountains; from the rolling pasturelands of the Piedmont to the rural character of Southside Virginia. The Virginia League of Conservation Voters Education Fund seeks to preserve these treasured landscapes and protect our natural resources for future generations.

We do this by educating residents and decision makers about important issues such as land use and conservation, transportation, energy-related issues, and air and water quality. We offer training workshops around the state and throughout the year to engage conservation-minded citizens in the democratic process.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

Over the past 12 years we have sought to educate decision makers and residents about conservation issues and encourage them to act. Over that time we have worked with scores of elected officials and their staff to help improve public policy. We are proud of our efforts to promote policies that protect our natural resources and protect a citizen's right to participate in those decisions.

Our annual goals and accomplishments are focused around our three major program areas:

Educating the Decision Makers
For the past four years we have taken legislators and their families to unique retreat locations and have conducted workshops related to water quality and energy policy. These hands-on opportunities have the ability to demonstrate just how fragile our environment truly is. In the coming year, we plan to expand these education and demonstration opportunities to even more decision makers on a more frequent basis.

Legislative Contact Teams (LCTs)
LCTs consist of three to five citizen leaders who meet with their elected officials throughout the year. We conduct 6 annual summer workshops for Team Members to provide ongoing guidance to leaders so they may effectively communicate conservation priorities to decision makers. Since the program's inception we have trained hundreds of Team Members on basic civic engagement techniques. Currently there are over 400 leaders in the program and we constantly seek to expand the program in terms of size, geography and diversity.

Civic Participation
Every year is an election year in Virginia. We take this dynamic as a valuable opportunity to continue to increase nonpartisan civic participation. We work to educate and encourage voters to get to the polls. Ideally they are well informed about conservation issues and vote with their concerns in mind. Our techniques are tried and true: we knock on doors to engage voters face to face and follow up with personal phone calls to urge action.

Leadership Statement:

VALCV-EF's role is to make conservation policy practical. We advance on policy only when citizens engage in the democratic process and help shape decision-making at every level. An example would be clean water. Everything matters - from the local governing body on the backyard creek to state and federal decisions affecting our Chesapeake Bay.

Program Description:
Through this program we work to educate state-level elected and appointed officials about conservation issues. For the past four years we have taken legislators and their families to unique retreat locations and have conducted workshops related to water quality and energy policy. These hands-on opportunities have the ability to demonstrate just how fragile our environment truly is and do so in a way that is more effective than a traditional training.

In the coming year, we hope to expand these education and demonstration opportunities to even more decision makers on a more frequent basis.
