Schizophrenia and Related Disorders Alliance of America promotes improvement in lives affected by schizophrenia-related brain disorders (disorders involving psychosis). The entire community is affected when the family, loved one, employee, colleague or neighbor is living with a schizophrenia-related disorder.

Why does this matter? Without clarity around their responsibilities and expectations, board members are not positioned to succeed. They may find themselves challenged to fulfill their governance responsibilities or frustrated by the expectations that the organization has set for them. BoardSource recommends that every new board member participate in a formal orientation process, and that all board members sign a pledge or agreement committing to their board service and to all of the responsibilities and expectations that come with service. Program Description:

Provide training and support for Schizophrenics Anonymous (SA), a peer support/self-help step program for persons who have schizophrenia or a related illness.

Program Long-Term Success:

People living with schizophrenia-related disorders have stated that "SA has helped save my life", "I have found friends", "I have a place to go where I don't feel judged", "SA has given me opportunities that I never thought I would have". SA calls had to be changed to weekend evenings to accommodate individuals who are working.

Program Short-Term Success:

An additional SA call day or 2 will be added because of the number of people calling in. An addition of a college age group will be added.

Telephone records and comments emailed to administration and leaders

Program Success Examples:

Group member manuals have been delivered to 1800 people in the last 18 months. Groups have been started Internationally. People have called into the Conference call Internationally as well as nationally.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

Peer support programming has been identified by SAMHSA as a promising practice to be added to the six SAMHSA-approved, evidence-based practices.  The Schizophrenics Anonymous (SA) self-help/peer support program offers consumers hope in an evidence-based program that is without cost to the consumer.  SA provides an opportunity for consumers to augment their treatment plans and foster recovery in an understanding, educational, empowering environment.
