Mr. Michael I. Crowther

Term:

Since June 2002

Profile:

Michael I. Crowther was appointed President and CEO of the Indianapolis Zoological Society in June 2002. Mike’s passion is the conservation of wild things and wild places, and he believes that the accredited zoos and aquariums of the world can play an important role in building connections between humans and nature, resulting in increased personal conservation action. During his tenure, Mike has presided over the creation and implementation of the Indianapolis Prize program, the world’s largest award for animal conservation. Mike developed the Indianapolis Zoo’s strategy of promoting sustainable behaviors via three primary resources: The Zoo’s Polly H. Hix Institute for Conservation and Research; The Indianapolis Prize; and, both Zoo-based and virtual exhibits designed to engage, enlighten, and empower the public.   As a professional fellow of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Mike serves on several boards, committees and task forces. He is a board member of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, the National Elephant Center, the International Species Information System (ISIS), as well as the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association. Mike also serves as a member of the IUPUI Museum Advisory Council and the CELL/BioCrossroads Task Force. He is a graduate fellow of Leadership New Jersey, one of the nation’s few statewide leadership programs, and was selected as one of the Philadelphia area’s outstanding leaders by the Macy’s/Philadelphia Inquirer “Follow a Leader” program.
