Leadership
Mr. Marcus Andrusko
Profile:
Marcus is the director and founder of the Boundary Waters Experience. Marcus has developed a love for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness throughout his entire life. He started visiting the park at the age of one, and has not missed a summer since. Marcus has been involved in Youth Ministry for many years in, church settings, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and primarily his eleven-year tenure with Young Life. Marcus has a vision and dream to take young people into the Boundary Waters, which originated during his college days at the University of Minnesota. His dream and vision led him to begin taking groups of Young Life students on week-long trips for the purpose of sharing Christ with his friends in Gods beautiful Creation of the Boundary Waters. After college, Marcus has gained relational business experience while working for a communication-consulting firm in Saint Paul. Upon leaving the firm, Marcus gained a Masters degree from Bethel College, during which time he studied interpersonal communication, group process, and specifically, wilderness ministry. Marcus' Masters thesis yielded primary research, which answered qualitative questions as to WHY and HOW wilderness ministry works, and how to improve on conventional wilderness ministry techniques. Currently, Marcus directs the Boundary Waters Experience, continues to volunteer lead at the Eden Prairie Young Life Club, and is a professor at Normandale Community College, teaching Communication courses.
Leadership Statement:

Marcus Andrusko conducted academic research about how
and why wilderness ministry works for his master’s thesis during his graduate
work at Bethel University. There
is a plethora of existing research indicating that the wilderness arena is a
wonderful experiential learning environment (what was being taught didn’t seem
to matter). Andrusko’s research
sought out to discover why and how it works well. The research used a theory of relational development and
self-disclosure developed by Sidney Jourard, Ph.D. to explain the unique
effectiveness of the wilderness setting. Andrusko’s qualitative research identified several active elements that
make the wilderness an effective and unique developmental leadership
experience. These active elements
include the roles of: trust development, sharing life stories, cohesion of the
community, norming effects, physical challenge, nature and introspection. This
research led to the development of this program and remains a key component for
the training of BWX Trail Guides.
