Program Description:
The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is the "museum" of the Academy. As such, it is the teaching, learning, and exhibition center that supports the mission of the Chicago Academy of Sciences. The new Museum and its campus actually increase the amount of green space in Lincoln Park and offered Chicago an indoor/outdoor nature experience. The Academy is playing a lead role in the re-population of endangered species through its work with butterflies. The Academy's nearly 250,000 specimens including some collected more than 100 years ago are incorporated in exhibits, education programs, and scientific research. Each year, 2000 teachers get the tools, help, and inspiration they need to teach science. 65,000 students see butterflies take their maiden voyage and engage with nature and the environment through hands-on activities. Exceptional exhibits bring nature right to visitors' fingertips. The Museum's icon exhibit, the Judy Istock Butterfly Haven delights all who enter with a kaleidoscope of 1,000 butterflies, 75 species, plus colorful birds.
Program Long-Term Success:
The Museum trains and supports more than 2,000 Chicago teachers in over 430 schools providing hands-on exhibits and programs to 65,000 students annually.
