Program Description:
The Christian Legal Society serves its members and the public through 4 operating ministries organizational Divisions:
Through its Legal Aid Ministries (LAM) Division, CLS recruits and trains lawyers to voluntarily provide free legal and spiritual counsel to the poor and the needy being served through facilities provided by cooperating faith-based social service providers, including selected churches, the Salvation Army or members of the International Union of Gospel Missions. CLS' Public Ministries also maintains a national legal referral service for the more than 250 people and organizations who weekly seek a referral to an attorney in their area who subscribes to CLS' Statement of Faith. Through its Center for Law and Religious Freedom - (CLRF or The Center)Division, CLS litigates for and defends religious freedom and the sanctity of human life in the courts, Congress, state legislatures, and federal, state and local government agencies.
Program Long-Term Success:
In addition to handling 250 legal referral contacts per week, CLS' Legal Aid Ministries has accomplished the following milestones in its national Christian Legal Aid Program that, through cooperating faith-based social service providers, provides legal aid, a presentation of the gospel and training in biblically-based reconciliation of conflict, outside of court, to the truly poor and needy in this country:
1.1 Distributed LAM resources and training materials to more than 950 LAM volunteers serving in 64 CLS sponsored programs in 29 states and 54 cities where an estimated 7,800 individuals and families receive help annually.
1.2 1,200 persons or organizations are now on the LAM mailing list.
1.3 Conducted the 8th Annual LAM National Recruitment and Training Conference in Washington, DC for 35 CLAP leaders and over 75 attorneys and law students from over 45 cities, after which many participants expressed an interest in participating in the LAM projects which CLS seeks to start in 10 new cities within the next year.
Program Short-Term Success:
A LAM Leadership Council has also been formed, composed of program directors from around the country, to guide the implementation of CLS' strategic plan to increase local LAM projects from 64 to 150, the number of trained lawyer and law student volunteers from 950 to 2000, and the number of free volunteered legal service hours annually provided to over 100,000 by 12-31-2012. CLS' Legal Aid Ministries also promotes biblical conflict reconciliation through its partnership with Peacemaker Ministries (www.Hispeace.org). CLS has expanded this referral ministry service to be a 24/7 web-based referral service for both clients and Christian member attorneys. It can be accessed by going to www.christianlawyerconnection.com and following the menu prompts.
