Mission Statement

ICSM educates future physicians, other health-care professionals, and scientists with a broad grounding in modern integrative biological medical science, basic sciences, preventive and evolutionary medicine, and clinical practice worldwide. It discovers and provides new scientific knowledge of the human condition and the origins of the human species. It disseminates this knowledge via publications, its website, and educational programs. It applies this knowledge to the maintenance of health of all peoples.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit

In the past ICSM has spearheaded curricular development in Anatomy for a new medical school in Africa, providing technical assistance in cadaver-based dissection, lecture content, and faculty training. Significant time and effort have been expended in planning for Native American K-12 and higher education in the health sciences. ICSM expanded its website and introduced a new online publication series aimed at delivering its message to the public more effectively. A new hands-on traveling educational program for museums and schools on human evolution was developed to commemorate the Darwin bicentenntial year. ICSM staff presented talks and poster sessions on the centers' activities throughout the year. Top goals for the current year have been development of the board, which has increased in number from three to seven, finalization of the development plans and budget for an ambitious expansion of activities in 2011, and fundraising by a combination of direct appeals and grant proposals.

Noel Boaz, Ph.D., M.D. founded ICSM and is an internationally known and widely published bioanthropologist and physician.

Leadership Statement:

<p>There are four historically Black medical schools in the United States, yet none for Native Americans. Native Americans are, medically speaking, the most poorly served population in the United States. To meet the need for more Native American physicians and health care professionals, ICSM is forming a K-12 national network of innovative schools with cross-cultural, scientifically integrative, narrative-based, and inquiry-based learning that will establish an educational "pipeline" to college and post-baccalaureate health care professional training. This ambitious program has been initiated by medical educators, scientists, and physicians to offset over 400 years of deteriorated health in the indigenous populations of America. But as ICSM works to improve the health of indigenous peoples, lessons learned will inform preventive medicine and will help Western urban peoples to meet the challenges posed by preventable and chronic disease. No other organization has a similar focus and mission. </p>
