Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank addresses hunger by addressing food waste, saving good food from senseless destruction so that hungry people might have food to eat. Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
Each year, Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank distributes close to 25 million pounds of food and other grocery products to roughly 1,300 agencies in western Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Those agencies in turn provide that food to approximately 100,000 at-risk Michigan families. Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank started the nation's first mobile pantry program over a decade ago. Now more than 100 regional food banks help agencies with limited refrigerated/frozen storage capacity provide their clients with nutritious, hard-to-store items like fresh produce, baked goods, and dairy products. Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank also conducted the internationally award-winning Waste Not Want Not Project with Michigan State University. The study's findings illuminate simple changes that will make it possible to adequately address the need for charitable food aid in the United States.
