Ms. Jodi Harpstead
Jodi Harpstead became the Chief Executive Officer of Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS) September 2, 2011.
From May 2007 to September 2011, Jodi Harpstead was the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS), where she lead efforts in Services, Human Resources, Information Technology and Finance. With over 2,300 employees, LSS offers a broad array of community services for people of all ages throughout Minnesota, including housing and crisis shelters, mental health counseling, adoption, financial counseling, senior nutrition, foster care and services for persons with disabilities.
Every day, sometimes heroically, the volunteers and staff give exceptional expression to the mission of Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota. I have been witness to counselors who make themselves available on weekends, at all hours, to families experiencing great trauma. I have seen results of our work on the streets caring for vulnerable, homeless teens. I see the compassion in managers as they implement cost-reduction strategies or cover a shift to make sure we stay both financially sound and ensure quality.
Because we are devoted to the LSS mission, we work relentlessly to increase our levels and quality of service. As examples:
Consumer-directed services for persons with disabilities increased by 14 percent.
Guardianship care grew by 13 percent.
Office-based mental health services grew by 9 percent.
Financial Counseling services served 32 percent more people compared to 2008: 36,678 individuals and families!
In these times, it took everything. Staff made significant sacrifices, forgoing wage increases and experiencing benefit reductions. The whole organization, including donors and nearly 10,000 volunteers, reached deep inside their hearts to ensure that dignity, safety and hope were real opportunities for those we serve.
LSS of Minnesota has been serving for a long time, longer than any other organization of its kind in Minnesota. That's not accidental. At LSS, we cherish our values of compassion and competence. Now, though, it's more important than ever for innovation and invention to reign. We are also about the important work of building public will to ensure the common good and protect Minnesota's most vulnerable citizens.
Fundamentally, LSS is grounded in the convictions that God loves all creation without condition and God yearns for us to love the neighbor. In this time, especially, expressing our values and convictions are essential in giving life to this organization's most extraordinary mission.
