Mission Statement

Founded in 1973 by community and student activists under the name University Community Video, the organization employed the powerful tool of video art and technology to elicit community dialogue, inspire social change and empower people to tell their own stories. Over time, we evolved and embraced a range of artistic media, changing our name in the 1980s and growing into one of the nation?s premier community-based arts centers. We receive recognition for our success engaging the power of the arts to increase social connections between people from different social, economic and ethnic groups. Our multi-disciplinary art programs inspire people to make changes in their lives and communities. By stimulating broader civic dialogue and by giving voice to the issues and experiences of underrepresented communities, we contribute to a stronger, healthier society. Intermedia Arts presents and supports the creation of the highest quality artistic work created through an authentic, community-engaged process. We place particular emphasis on empowering underrepresented communities by providing space, support and recognition of the rights of specific communities to assert their place in cultural life. We encourage authentic expression of individual cultural values, stories and histories - in their own words, in their own ways.

Evidence of Impact

Intermedia Arts is a multicultural, multidisciplinary arts organization. Their programs and services support diverse representations in the arts for people of color as well as a diversity of arts mediums. They engage artist and non-artists in the community through exhibitions and events, leadership training, professional development, and programs that directly reach out to the community. They are particularly supportive of projects that utilize art as a tool for activism, social-justice, and identity exploration. Intermedia Arts is also deeply entrenched in the community. They not only foster cross-cultural cross-discipline conversations in the community, they have also been a driving force for economic development in their neighborhood.

Vibrant Community Connection
Allowing communities to explore similarities and differences between them, benefits so many people. This organization’s community-focused program also provides a means to come together on different issues. Their youth programs are really well done. By welcoming all disciplines, they are truly providing access on many levels. Nonprofit Senior Staff
I see their impact as their work in developing a cohort of Arts and Community Development Fellows over several years. In addition, they have an impact in their work facilitating and hosting organically developed community art initiatives, and creating opportunities for shared spaces with artists and community groups. Other
Intermedia Arts has been a model of an organization that connects with diverse cultural communities. In lots of conversations, when community leaders from arts or non-arts sectors are looking for insight about how to collaborate more effectively with immigrant and culturally based communities, someone in the room often recommends looking to Intermedia Arts. They are an example of how a small organization can have a very large influence. Other
Intermedia Arts has done a terrific job of involving the community in its art projects and encouraging and developing young and emerging artists. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Diversity in Art & Artists
I see their impact as advancing access and advancing the business skills needed to sustain the artist. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Intermedia Arts serves artists and communities of color as well as youth programs. They are also inclusive of the Native American population. Intermedia Arts is continually growing and changing to meet the needs of the artists and community members it serves. Other
Intermedia Arts works on constant inclusion of artists of all cultures and the production of shows, many in media and cross-sector work. Their high public visibility means attention to the global diversity of the metro area. Nonprofit Senior Staff
My organization has worked with Intermedia Arts and has been impressed with their focus on showcasing artists who are often not represented in mainstream arts organizations, particularly artists of color. This has had a lasting impact on exposing the broader public to little-known, but amazing artists and encouraging more marginalized artists to follow their artistic passions. Nonprofit Senior Staff
The type of work that Intermedia Arts presents, supports, curates, and makes space for is so critical to the artistic vibrancy of the community. They are always on the edge of presenting a narrative, perspective, series, or exhibition that you cannot find anywhere else in the Twin Cities. The work they are connected to is created from a place of true honesty and exploration of identity within the individual. This connects to realities of the communities from where that individual comes. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Their programming is directly aimed at under-served artists and focuses on a wide range of mediums, media, and disciplines. Researcher and Faculty
They have an impact on great cross section of artists. Other
This organization offers strong arts programming, which encompasses many art forms, from traditional to contemporary, and is culturally inclusive. You see this reflected in exhibits, programs and audience. Other
Programs to Cultivate & Engage Artists
I see their impact as the numbers of people engaged in their offerings (theatre, exhibits, and activities) often actively rather than just as attendees. Nonprofit Senior Staff
I see their impact as their leadership program, youth programs, and their re-granting programs. Nonprofit Senior Staff
If you run down a list of individual artists passionate about access to arts, culture, and making a difference in creating access in diverse communities, a very high percentage of them have Intermedia Arts in common. Intermedia Arts is accessed by these artists for use of the space as a venue for their performing or visual arts, in availing themselves for training or career advancement support, or participation in the Community Creative Leadership Institute to name few. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Intermedia Arts has encouraged conversations around art. They are a welcoming place for artists and arts advocates to meet. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Intermedia Arts has had an impact on individuals, their immediate neighborhood, and the broader arts and culture ecosystem in the Twin Cities. Specifically, Intermedia Arts provides a critical venue for visual, performing, spoken word, writers and other artists to produce and present work. Without Intermedia Arts, many of these artists would not have a place to develop and present work. Intermedia Arts helped spearhead the rejuvenation of the Lyn-Lake neighborhood where they are located. They have been a catalyst for new private investment and a good neighbor to residents and businesses alike. Finally, Intermedia Arts, through its leadership development programs, such as the Creative Community Leadership Institute, has helped develop an entire generation of artists who are truly making a difference in the community. Art changes everything. Foundation Professional
Intermedia Arts offers a place for young companies and artists to grow. Foundation Professional
Champions for Art as Activism
Intermedia Arts is a multidisciplinary art center that provides art-making and professional development resources to the arts community and offers a space for engagement to the broader community. The organization has been around for over 30 years. It has always been a home for artists working at the junction of art and social justice or in a community-based practice. It is a home for artists and participants. This organization has a strong Board of Directors that is actively involved. Foundation Professional
They are very focused on artists as activists. Nonprofit Senior Staff

Organizational Strengths

Intermedia Arts is known to be a highly resilient organization. When the organization went through financial hard times recently, they actively restricted the organization and were able to bounce back. What was most notable about this time was the organization’s transparency and willingness to involve the community in their restructuring work. Their community engagement work has been powerful on many levels. Among other things, they are able to leverage art as a tool to start important conversations relevant to community members. Experts also note that Intermedia Arts has a great physical space. Not only is it centrally located, but the organization has been intentional in utilizing all aspects of the structure to support their work.

Great Space
They have a terrific space in the middle of the city, removing yet another barrier, which is truly welcoming to all. The fact that other organizations can use their space is a boon to the community. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Intermedia uses their resources very strategically to impact, support, and make space for artists and audience in a variety of ways. From their exhibition space, to their performance space, their meeting space and graffiti art wall in the parking lot of the building, every corner is used intentionally to honor and present art and foster the connections that make this art potent and compelling. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Deep Community Connection
This organization serves youth and many immigrant groups that are not reached by most other Minnesota organizations. They do this by using artists' work to address community problems and enhance engagement in their own and others' cultural practices. The multi-disciplinary nature of their arts activities helps to bridge art forms often segregated from each other. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They have a creative response to fulfilling the strategic direction of the organization. They also have strong staff leadership. They support less mainstream art forms including B-Girls and Graffiti artists. Lastly, they are quick to implement community building with the use of their artistic skill sets. Other
Their strength is in walking their talk! When Intermedia Arts underwent a serious fiscal crisis a few years ago, they handled it by engaging their community-based stakeholders with an inspiring level of transparency. They issued a call to action and within just a few days, hundreds of people who care about the organization showed up to express their concern and support. I heard colleagues say it was the most ethnically and racially diverse convening they had ever witnessed in Minnesota. The importance of Intermedia's role in many diverse communities became apparent as multiple communities stepped forward to help support the organization on every level. At a time when other organizations were hiding their vulnerability and silently going under, Intermedia modeled that survival was possible through a courageous stance of honesty and connectedness. They also have a strong capacity to adapt. In response to the fiscal crisis, Intermedia Arts scaled down temporarily and focused on implementing a vision that had been on their long-term horizon. They were nimble and creative in shifting gears to create an organizational structure that would be sustainable in these economically turbulent times. Other
Intermedia Arts focuses on community, diversity, and explores relevant and pressing political and cultural issues. It has a number of programs for youth and developing artists. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They are a multi-disciplinary arts space, with a gallery and theater available for artists to showcase their work. They offer workshops and office space for those who are working in community art making. Nonprofit Senior Staff
I see their strengths and their work within the neighborhood and their tie into urban renewal. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Excellent Location
Their biggest strength is their space. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Resilience
Their strength is their resiliency. Intermedia Arts was hit hard by the economic downturn and funding trends. They have worked hard to sensibly reorient their approach, which is now completely in line with their mission and past experience, but with a renewed flexibility and vivaciousness. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Intermedia Arts faced a significant challenge about 3 years ago and nearly closed their doors. It was their strong leadership and deep connections in the community that allowed them to come back stronger and better than ever before. They have a renewed sense of clarity around their purpose and mission that sets them up for incredible success, moving forward. Foundation Professional
Continuously Innovative
This organization has remained flexible and responsive over time. Intermedia Arts is maintaining its central mission to build understanding among people through art. However, it has been open to who the artists are, developing new programs, trying new approaches, and expanding and contracting the scope. The different leaders of this organization have succeeded in making the space accessible to many. Foundation Professional
Their programming has always been innovative and groundbreaking. The leadership of Intermedia Arts, two female directors, empowers young women and girls to take on leadership roles in their own lives. Other
Openness & Mentoring
Their openness and mentoring make them a leader. Foundation Professional
Strong Leadership
They have a strong board, and it is getting stronger. In addition, they have smart, "on the ground" leadership by their Executive Director. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Excellent Communication & Marketing
Their website, brochure, and marketing design are unique and modern. Programming reaches cross-cultural audience. Researcher and Faculty
The diversity of programming is impressive, as is their multiple means of communicating with and connecting to a diverse and broad community within the city, the state, nationally and internationally. Their e-news letter, website and other means of communication continue to grow the audience while expanding the programming to meet the growing needs of communities. Other
Excellent Programming
I see their strengths as their diversity of programming and their broad based support. Other

Areas for Improvement

Intermedia Arts should continue to improve their financial management. While their finances have improved since their fiscal crisis, there is still some room for improvement in this area. Similarly, some experts recommended that Intermedia Arts look to diversify and strengthen their funding base. They may also want to consider adding additional staff to support their growing work. Many experts noted that Intermedia Arts would benefit from better marketing and communications. This would help to spread the word about their great programming and may also help to communicate the organizations stability and financial recovery. They may also want to improve on their existing partnerships as well as exploring new partnership possibilities such as with schools.

Improve Marketing and Communication
They could improve with better marking; more people should know about them. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Intermedia Arts is one of the Twin Cities best kept secrets. They need to get better at visibility. It looks like they are actively taking steps to improve in this arena. Other
The biggest challenge Intermedia Arts has is helping people understand that the challenges it faced a few years ago are over and have made the organization stronger and better positioned for the next 40 years (they are celebrating their 40th anniversary next year). Foundation Professional
Additional Staff
Intermedia needs more staffing, especially in the curatorial and programming areas. They also need better marketing; they could reach many more people than they do. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They operate many programs with a small staff. They may need to grow their staff if they are broadening their reach or expanding programs in the coming years. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They are spread too thin. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Improve Partnerships
I think they could improve their processes with other nonprofits; they could work on making the risk and process more equitable. Nonprofit Senior Staff
More grassroots marketing and development is needed to make people aware of this organization. Foundation Professional
I am wondering if there is a way to connect more intentionally with schools and other arts education programs as a means of exchanging ideas and ways of working in the arts and through the arts. Other
Strengthen Board Leadership
They could be improved by stronger board members. Other
Diversity Funding Base
They have some experiments happening in the multi-use of their space for artist office rental. They could benefit from more research and experimentation in diversified earned revenue, to sustain their organization, particularly in terms of audience access. Nonprofit Senior Staff
They would be improved by a stronger and more diverse funding base. Also, they could use smarter public relations, marketing, and communication to make their values and issues clear. Nonprofit Senior Staff
Improve Financial and Operations Management
The financial state of the organization was, a few years ago, quite uncertain. That has improved, but there is stillroom for improvement. In a similar vein, the organization needs more staff. Nonprofit Senior Staff
The founding director left a few years ago and the leadership transition was difficult. A director was hired that did not have the financial management skills to fortify the organization. He resigned but not until after the finances were in terrible condition. The current director has had to bring the organization back from the brink. The leadership needs time to continue stabilizing the organization and build on the exciting work that is already happening. Foundation Professional
They could improve their finance management. Researcher and Faculty
They could improve by strengthening organizational operations and solidifying programming. Other
