Since Fair Trade USA started certifying Fair Trade products in 1998, farmers and workers around the world have earned nearly $215 million more than they would have by selling through conventional channels, gaining more than $49 million in additional “social premium” funds. These community development funds go towards vital services such as health care and education, as well as environmental conservation projects.

Paul Rice is the founding President & CEO of Fair Trade USA and has been recognized as a leading social entrepreneur. Previously, Paul worked for 11 years as a rural development specialist in the mountainous Segovias region of Nicaragua, where he founded and led a highly successful organic coffee export cooperative called PRODECOOP. His first-hand experience in the development of cooperative organic coffee export ventures is unparalleled in the U.S. coffee industry. Paul holds an Economics and Political Science degree from Yale University and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley. Paul has received the prestigious international Ashoka Fellowship for his pioneering work as a social entrepreneur in the Fair Trade movement. Paul has also been honored by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship as one of the world's top Social Entrepreneurs.
