Eureka Recycling has demonstrated, beginning over 10 years ago, that waste is preventable, not inevitable. They have probably done more to change the broader community expectations about reducing waste and increasing the amount (tonnage) and types of things recycled. They have worked in partnership with cities and other nonprofits to "push the envelope" regarding what is possible, doing the first zero waste event (St. Paul Bike Classic with over 5,000 participants) and the Living Green Expo. Now it is more commonplace to attend zero waste events, thanks to Eureka Recycling figuring out how to do it and training others to do the same. — Other

Susan Hubbard has been envisioning a zero waste society for most of her adult life and has systematically taken steps to bring others along with her in this endeavor. She is a dynamic force that is motivated by what collectively gets accomplished, not by getting recognition for it. In addition, the culture of the organization is defined by its connections and partnerships with communities. I don't know all of the details, but they have begun implementation of a leadership succession plan. A significant challenge to any nonprofit is transition from a founding leader to the next leader. Eureka is taking a very thoughtful approach to this challenge. — Other
