Program Description:
Breakthrough Scholarship Fund LifeScience Alley, in cooperation with the Office of Clinical Research of the University of Minnesota, annually produces two Breakthrough educational programs spotlighting recent research in academia and industry. A portion of the net proceeds from attendance is transferred to Alley Institute to fund Medical Residents in the discipline under review. These scholarships are distributed by the appropriate University of Minnesota Medical School departments.

Carlson Study This study determined attitudes and experiences of employees of this self-insured corporation relating to end-of-life. The study paved the way for the implementation of a palliative care benefit. This study is complete and was initiated by the Minnesota Palliative Care Partnership, formerly administered through Alley Institute.

Program Description:
Bakken Symposium The University of Minnesota's Academic Health Center initiated an annual symposium in 2007, recognizing its strong history of innovation in the development of medical devices. The 2007 Symposium featured the career of Earl Bakken, the founder of Medtronic and developer of the implantable pacemaker. The annual symposium is named in his honor. Alley Institute provided logistics and registrations for the event.

Program Description:
AHEC Study This is a two-part research project to determine factors which might improve recruitment and retention of selected healthcare providers in rural Minnesota. The first phase is a baseline attitudinal survey; the second phase engages the respondents in a Delphi process. The study will be completed in 2009 and is a workforce development project.
