Major programs include The Greater St. Louis Science Fair, Speakers for Science and Scientists in the Classroom, Junior Academy of Science and St. Louis BioBlitz.<br />

of the Academy of Science of St. Louis are to: - Increase public
knowledge of science, applied science and engineering; - Provide a
forum for collaboration and dissemination of programs and resources in
science and related areas; - Stimulate exchanges among engineers,

- Enhance teaching of science and engineering; - Recognize achievement

The Greater St Louis Science Fairhas been a science catalyst for students for more than 60 years. 55,000 students in grades K-12 participate in the Fair. Each year there are 3,000 top projects presented at the Fair at Queeny Park representing more than 250 public and private schools.<br />

The Speakers for Science programs has reached 20,000 students. These students are inspired and enthralled by the unique opportunity to connect with our amazing group of volunteer scientists from public, private and academic sectors. All events are available at no cost.<br />

The Junior Academy of Science involves more than 400 middle and high school students across the region. They experience hands on opportunities in science, engineering and medicine. Junior Academy membership offers challenging and engaging science competitions and opportunities for a full range of academic levels. <br />

Profile:
Mary Burke has been the Executive Director of the Academy of Science since September 2004. Ms. Burke has more than 20 years of professional experience in the marketing of education and science programs and organizations, including the Public Broadcasting System and the Missouri Dept of Elementary & Secondary Education. Burke is on the board of the Triangle Coalition and is a member of several other science and science teaching organizations. She is also a recent graduate of Webster University's Management and Leadership Master's program. Ms. Burke works with science and technology professions from public, private, and academic sectors to lead science educator initiatives and directs the Academy's science education and outreach efforts.

Program Description:
Following its mission to improve science literacy in the St. Louis region, the Academy supports these major initiatives: Junior Academy of Science: a membership organization for students in grades 6-12 who are interested in science and engineering. Members learn from scientific field trips, meet with professional scientists and engineers, and earn annual science achievement awards. Greater St. Louis Science Fair: For 60 years, the Science Fair has been an amazing catalyst for students in kindergarten through high school. Hundreds of educators, professional scientists, and science advocates work year round to bring science inquiry to life for 55,000 students. Speakers for Science: A no-cost resource of more than 700 working scientists, medical specialists, engineers and science educators, from the public, private, and academic sectors. Schools request speakers on topics as varied as plant science, archaeology, genetics, and rainforest ecology. Science Seminar Series: free public lectures present topical issues in collaborative forums. Outstanding St. Louis Scientists Awards: The Academy annually honors the innovative and lifetime achievements of individual St. Louis scientists and engineers and those who by teaching or mentoring, increase science literacy. Academy Fellows: A brain trust of 120 renowned scientists and engineers. BioBlitz: Collaborative 24-hour survey of Forest Park's biodiversity.
Program Long-Term Success:
More than 400 middle and high school students from public, private, and home schools across the region experience hands-on opportunities in science, engineering, and medicine through the Junior Academy.
