Leadership

Ms. Teresa Johnson

Term:

Since Oct 2009

Leadership Statement:

At Animal Haven you will discover staff and volunteers committed to making the world more humane for humans and animals alike. We know that the vast majority of our animal friends leave through adoption and spend the remainder of their days as a cherished family member.

While our shelter is dated, Animal Haven's philosophy for sheltering companion animals is state-of-the-art. By allowing all healthy companion animals the chance to find a loving family, we have witnessed a dramatic change in our community's perception of homeless pets. They are no longer considered outcasts or animals with severe health and behavioral issues, rather, animals who have been failed somewhere along the line by humans. Coming to work is an easy task for me, as Executive Director.

In the past 40 years, Johnson County has grown at a rate of 370%. Current estimated population for the county is approximately 600,000. Shelter space for the county has not experienced that growth. In fact, in 2005, shelter space for our county was reduced by 10,000 sq. ft. when the Kansas Animal Health Department closed the Sunflower Humane Society.

Animals play a big part in our lives. I am fortunate to be able to dedicate my life to changing community perception about homeless pets, decreasing pet overpopulation through outreach and education and witnessing all of the adoption success stories that take place here. Animal Haven is a home between homes for thousands of animals. It is an honor to make that home a happy and healthy one for our furry friends with nowhere else to go.

Program: Comprehensive Adoption Program

Budget:
--
Category:
Animal-Related
Population Served:
General Public/Unspecified

Program Description:

Each pet can have different and specific needs, so we work carefully to make adoption matches that maximize the happiness of the entire family, including pets and people in the household. Dog and cat adoption fees include the cost of Spay/Neuter Surgery, vaccines and microchipping.

Animal Haven has a multi-media program encompassing print, TV & internet marketing of adoptable pets. Additionally, retail adoption centers will be established throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. This program is responsive to community needs and will have adoptable pets in the community more frequently.

Program Long-Term Success:

The ultimate goal of our adoption program is to provide a lifelong, caring home for every pet.

Program Short-Term Success:

In taking a proactive approach to months with slower adoptions, Animal Haven has created innovate and exciting adoption specials such as: You Pick the Price and Pay What They Weigh increasing adoptions by almost 40% in July 2009.

Program Success Monitored by:

Animal Haven receives frequent success stories, letters and visits from past adopters on a regular basis sharing their thanks and updates on their pets adopted at Animal Haven.

Program Success Examples:

Animal Haven has great success with its adoption program. Each year we exceed our adoption goals and adopt more and more pets into their lifelong, caring home.

1,457 pets adopted in 2007
2,106 adopted in 2008
As of July of 2009 we have already found homes for more than 1,093 homeless pets.

Program: Pet Retention Program

Budget:
--
Category:
Animal-Related
Population Served:
General Public/Unspecified

Program Description:

While some reasons for surrendering a pet at a shelter are unavoidable, others can be prevented. Animal Haven is developing a program to help pets stay with their guardians. We will be offering a library of resources online, as well as low cost training and pet behavior classes. We are also exploring the idea of a behavioral hotline and Ask-a-Trainer forum.

Another aspect of a Pet Retention program is reuniting lost pets with their guardians. The intake coordinator along with our lost pet volunteers check for microchips on the lost pets brought in by local cities and citizens, as well as scan lot pet web sites for possible matches.
Program Long-Term Success:

The ultimate success of a pet retention program would be to drastically reduce the number of pets entering the shelter.
Program Short-Term Success:

Pet owners overcome pet behavior or related issues in order to keep their pets.

Lost pets are quickly reunited with their owners.

Program Success Monitored by:

Animal Haven tracks the number of pets that are surrendered by their guardians. We will be looking to see a decline in the number of pets that enter the shelter.
Program Success Examples:

Animal Haven counsels people when they surrender a pet about other options available to them. We have seen pets remain with their guardians after being educated on way to correct issues.

There are many times that a lost pet that has been brought in by a city is found on a lost pet website, thus reuniting them quickly with their family.

Program: Foster Care Program

Budget:
--
Category:
Animal-Related
Population Served:
Adults

Program Description:

Foster homes increase the shelters capacity to help. They also allow for pets that may need more one-on-one attention to get the care they deserve. Foster care is the key to reducing euthanasia rates in young shelter animals.

Program Long-Term Success:

The ultimate goal of a foster program is that no special needs pet would need to spend time in the shelter. They would be in a caring home getting the individualized attention they deserve.
Program Short-Term Success:

In the short-term, the Foster Care program has allowed Animal Haven to create a great deal more space for our pets. As of July 2009, the program is allowing us to help approximately 114 more pets.

Program Success Monitored by:

We monitor the success of our Foster Care program through the use of our Kennel Report.
Program Success Examples:

Paris was a pregnant dog brought to Animal Haven by an animal control officer. Shortly after arrival she began to go into premature labor. Her puppies were in danger. One of our foster parents took Paris home, where two weeks later she successfully deliver seven healthy puppies.
Program: Humane Education Program

Budget:
--
Category:
Animal-Related
Population Served:
Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)

Program Description:

Animal Haven is developing a Humane Education program that will educate the community about caring for pets and reducing pet overpopulation. Partnering with a trainer, Animal Haven goes into schools with an assembly that educates children:

about dog body language,

how to approach a pet you do not know, and

how to help homeless pets in the community.

Program Long-Term Success:

Long-term success of the Humane Education program would be that every person in the Kansas City metropolitan area would know how to properly care for a pet and what they could do to help homeless pets.
Program Short-Term Success:

Short-term success of the program is seen every time we have our presentations in a school. The children leave with a greater knowledge of pets and a desire to help their community.
Program Success Monitored by:

The success of this program is monitored by post assembly surveys given to the students.
Program Success Examples:

Overall feedback of our humane education program has been positive. In the post assembly surveys the students mentioned that they had learned a great deal from the slide show regarding how and when to properly approach a dog.
