Mission Statement
Our mission is to increase government transparency and accountability; to ensure sound, equitable regulatory and budgetary processes and policies; and to protect and promote active citizen participation in our democracy.
Our vision is for a more just and democratic society, one in which an open, responsive government protects people's health, safety, and well-being; safeguards the environment; honors the public's right to information; values an engaged citizenry; and adequately invests in the common good.
Our niche in the public interest community is our specialized understanding of the apparatus of government, particularly the executive branch of the federal government. We often serve as a first responder, alerting and convening advocates in specific fields such as the environment, labor, or child welfare, to threats or opportunities that could profoundly impact the advocates' causes but that would not necessarily show up on their own radar screens. We place a high value on bridging the gap between Washington and the grassroots level. Our relationships span a wide array of groups at the national, state, and local level, providing a powerful communications network, and allowing us to leverage our resources many times over.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit
2010 highlights include: we helped assess agency Open Government Plans, encouraging federal agencies to make more information available to the public; we developed and are advocating for standards for high-quality information related to accountability that all agencies need to consistently and voluntarily provide in searchable formats; we escalated our advocacy for strong regulatory safeguards and pushed back against those who falsely claim that regulations kill jobs; and we brought together experts and advocates to develop a pro-active environmental right-to-know agenda. Continuing those efforts and more (see our 2011 Work Plan Summary at http://www.ombwatch.org/about_us), our top priorities for 2011 are to 1) counteract the anti-regulatory attacks coming from big business and Congress, 2) advocate for greater transparency of high-priority information to strengthen government integrity, and 3) finalize development and promote the use of new web-based tools that link government spending to performance.
