Program Description:
Advocacy: The Amputee Coalition of America advocates for the right of people with limb loss. This includes access to, and delivery of, information, quality care, appropriate devices, reimbursement, and the services required to lead empowered lives. The Coalition promotes full implementation of the Americans with Disailities Act, and other legislation which guarantees full participation in society for all people, regardless of disability. The Coalition also sensitizes professionals, the general public and policy makers to the issues, needs and concerns of amputees. Support: The Amputee Coalition of America publishes inMotion, a magazine that comprehensively addresses areas of interest and concern to amputees and those who care for and about them. The Coalition also facilitates a toll-free hotline that provides answers and resources for people who have experienced the loss of a limb and those involved with their lives. The Coalition also provides support through facilitating a peer network of experienced, trained amputees who provide emotional and informational support to new amputees and their families. Peers make contact through personal visitation, when possible, and by phone, email, FAX, and surface mail. Education: The Amputee Coalition of America develops and distributes educational resources, booklets, video tapes, and fact sheets to enhance the knowledge and coping skills of people affected by amputation or congential limb deficiencies. The Coalition acts as a source of comprehensive information regarding amputation and rehabilitation through its National Limb Loss Information Center, and provides technical help, resources and training for local amputee educational and support organizations. The Coalition conducts programs for its members, professionals, and the general public to educate them regarding the physical, emotional, technological, and other issues involving amputees.
Program Long-Term Success:
The National Limb Loss Information Center (NLLIC) began as a small collection of articles, and today contains over 2100 items, including issues of inMotion magazine, the ACA's award-winning bimonthly publication, various other publications, and fact sheets in both English and Spanish, as well as in easy read format.
