Leadership Statement:
<div>The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay has promoted a collaborative approach to the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers for decades. This work laid the foundation for the federal-state partnership known today as the Chesapeake Bay Program as well as significant agreements that set wide ranging goals for Bay restoration.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Much of the Alliance's work has not been headline-grabbing. Rather, it has been the quiet steady work of building coalitions - bringing together diverse groups to find common ground and connecting people to the Bay and its rivers. This is work we have in common with many partners - work that builds the foundation on which local watershed stewardship relies.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Today, the Alliance's core mission remains focused on saving the Bay through collaboration, partnerships, and consensus-building. However, partners in the Chesapeake Bay restoration effort are grappling with ever more complex issues and challenging times. The recent federal executive order has yielded new commitments while an unprecedented push toward strong regulatory compliance has strained the bonds of shared leadership and brought new political pressure and heightened accountability for meeting water quality goals. There is greater urgency for making progress, however, more than ever, the financial and human resources needed to accomplish these goals are uncertain. At the same time, much of our public discourse seems more rancorous and divisive than ever, even when it comes to the Bay and its watershed.</div>
