Mission Statement

<p >Connecting people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation.</p> The purpose of the Virginia Living Museum shall be to stimulate knowledge, awareness and appreciation of the biological and physical world, and to develop an understanding of its relationship to the environment of the planet and the universe beyond. This shall be accomplished by providing a variety of living interpretive exhibits and education programs for the public, students and educators that encourage a commitment to protection and conservation of our natural world and its delicately balanced components.

Page Hayhurst came to the VLM in September 2005 after spending eight years as director of development at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Gloucester Point, VA, where she was responsible for all external relations and fundraising. She was the first full-time development professional at the Museum of Fine Arts in Roanoke and spent seven years working in development and alumni relations for The Collee of William and Mary School of Law before joining VIMS in 1997. She holds a bachelor's degree in art history and government from William and Mary and a master of humanities in museum studies from The University of Richmond.

Program Description:

The Virginia Living Museum's trained educators provide hands-on classroom and laboratory programs in the natural and space sciences for students in grades K-12. Programs are offered at the museum, in-school and during off-site safaris. All programs are grade-level targeted and correlated to Virginia's Standards of Learning.<br />

Program Long-Term Success:

More than 2.5 million students have received hands-on science instruction from the Virginia Living Museum since 1966.

Program Short-Term Success:

The Virginia Living Museum reached 59,000 students with formal education programs during the 2008-09 school year.<br />

Program Success Monitored by:

Written evaluation forms are distributed to all teachers whose students participate in VLM programs. At the end of each school year, summative program review meetings are conducted by the Museum&#8217;s education staff with input from school system administrative advisors.&nbsp; Museum educators review written evaluations, assess program strengths and weaknesses, and discuss modifications for the coming year. <br />

Program Success Examples:

The Virginia Living Museum's education programs are endorsed by the Virginia Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation. The museum has contracts with four school systems (Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg-James City County and Gloucester County) to provide science education to their students.<br />
