Mission Statement

The Center uses research, advocacy, and litigation to 1) protect Appalachian communities and the natural environment that supports them by enforcing and strengthening state and federal environmental laws and by forcing the region's extractive and polluting industries to pay the true costs of doing business; and 2) revitalize Appalachian communities by helping to develop and implement an environmentally sustainable and equitable economic policy for the region.

Executive Director, Joe Lovett, is an attorney who was the architect and lead counsel for Bragg v. Flowers, the 1998 case that was the first successful challenge to a mountaintop removal mine. Since then Joe has not only been successful in numerous legal challenges related to coal mining and to the Clean Water Act but has become a leader regionally and nationally on issues related to coal mining and to the Clean Water Act. Joe oversees the day-to-day operations of the organization and is lead council.
